I think it's great for the players to get one more chance to play a game, the bowl experience and everything that comes along with it.

But as a fan ... it's hard to get excited about another season of high hopes ending in disappointment and then trying to get hyped for a game that might as well be a scrimmage because you don't know A) who cares to even be there and B) who is even going to play because of NFL draft stock

It's a broken system ... obviously. When you have 78 bowls teams that most are barely a game or two over .500 is a bowl really a "reward"?

An Armed Forces Bowl win over Utah State isn't going to suddenly make 2019 a great season? I hope people can see that …"

bshot- I would suggest that nobody is forcing you to watch Ohio if they end up in a bowl game. "Who cares to even be there?" Ask the players who would love to play one more game for the green and white? Many fans just enjoy watching Ohio play a football game one more time this season. Would you ask the same question to Bobcat basketball fans who enjoy watching Ohio play Rio Grande, Heidelberg or Wilberforce? Many Ohio supporters who follow Bobcat athletic programs enjoy watching their favorite school perform no matter what the occasion.
You are totally missing the context of my post ...

I didn't say anything about fans. It's about the players. Re-read what I posted ... and then go back and watch last year's bowl game vs. SD State and tell me the Aztec football players were excited to be there?

They couldn't have look less excited if they tried ...

Lost 3 straight to end the regular season, pissed away the MWC championship and then leave sunny, beautiful San Diego to go play a MAC school that I'm guessing most players on the SDSU roster probably had never even heard of in suburban Dallas in the cold, rainy weather.

I think that would check my "A)" box in the previous post. SD State didn't care to be there.

To further respond to your comment ... as a fan, I was at that game ... along with the 500 other folks who braved the elements. It was a horrible environment ... as bad as any midweek MACtion garbage. Still enjoyed my trip ... saw an Ohio win and had fun with friends.

I'm already looking into options if Ohio is fortunate to make the Boca Raton Bowl (they're due in the rotation ... so I'm crossing my fingers)

So again, I think you misunderstood my comments ... it was not directed toward fans. It was towards the product on the field. A lot of teams that "earn" bowl bids have zero interest in being there ... especially when they are lower tier'd bowl games with P5 schools. I know every situation is unique .... but it's a lot like an NCAA tourney bubble team playing in the NIT ... a lot of times, they just aren't motivated to be there. Just look at how many players sit out the games because of NFL draft stuff.

When bowl games actually meant something ... and were a true reward for a good season, almost all teams were engaged and excited to be there. I really don't think that's the case any more with the watered down bowl system.

I welcome another game ... especially to see Rourke one more time. But the result will do nothing to dampen the disappointment of the season. It was another year of high hopes that fell short. A microcosm of the recent Solich era. I'll take 9-4 or 8-5 year and a MAC title and a 77-0 bowl loss rather than a 6-6 wet blanket season capped with a 100-0 Dollar General Bowl win.

In other words...you just love to complain. A lot.
Yes bshot44 complains... a lot. i mean a lot. But he is one of the biggest Bobcat fans I know and has been a friend for 20+ years. As much as I hate, his constant negativity on this subject. He isn't wrong. This year was a disappointment. We could have and should have done better. No amount of nostalgia for tearing down the goal posts against Illinois St or the Cleve or Litch era changes that. I love what Frank has done for our program. We are better now and it is okay to be disappointed by a 6-6 bowl game. That doesn't mean we all can't appreciate and enjoy it for what it is. A hopeful positive capper to a tough year.

When bowl games actually meant something? can you explain when this was? This is as big a farce as "responsible gun ownership" and "you look great in that fedora, hipster".

6-6 and 6-5 teams have been going to bowls for decades. that was also when 10-1 and 9-2 teams were left home. Whatever your argument against a bowl game is, "it was so much better in the old days" is not a good one.
I know 6 win teams have been going to bowl games for forever ...

But in this 39+ bowl game, "everybody gets a trophy (bowl bid)" world we live in .... bowl bids aren't nearly as appealing for players.

Why else would players skip bowl games? A lot of times teams look less than interested in being there.

In 1988 there were 17 bowls ... 22 in 1998. And all were in desirable "vacation" spots that felt like a reward for the season ... a true prize.

Do you think players are getting excited for a trip to Detroit? Birmingham? Fort Worth? Frisco? Montgomery? Annapolis? Albuquerque?

I think you get my point. It's watered down.

Quantity doesn't always mean quality.

We dodged a bullet.
We dodged no bullet, Nebraska is just flat out not very good.

I don't think his point had anything to do with Nebraska, per se. It was just another 5-6 team picking up a loss, increasing the chances that Ohio gets a bowl bid.

The MAC has five bowl slots but only four 7-win teams (CMU, Fiami, Buffalo, WMU). The fifth slot will go to one of the four 6-6 teams. There are several things the MAC could consider in filling that fifth slot:

MAC records: Ohio 5-3, Kent 5-3, Toledo 3-5, EMU 3-5 (Ohio beat Kent)
Head-to-head: Toledo 2-0, Ohio 1-0. Kent 1-2, EMU 0-2
Record vs division champs: Ohio 0-1, Toledo 0-1, EMU 0-1, Kent 0-1
Record vs MAC 7-win teams: Kent 1-1, Ohio 1-2, Toledo 1-2, EMU 1-3

It probably looks best for Ohio, worst for EMU. My guess is they'll give preference to MAC records. A team that finishes 5-3 and 2nd in the division should win out over 3-5 teams that finished tied for 5th in their division. Between Kent and Ohio, Ohio should get that fifth slot.

L.C. makes sense and because of that it will be a long shot, IMHO, that any 6-6 MAC team make a bowl.
Hope I'm wrong.

I think at least 3, maybe all 4, of the MAC 6-6 teams make a bowl.

Yes college football has more bowl games than needed. Yes college basketball has more post season tournaments than needed. CIT, CBI, etc. etc. but most fans of these schools enjoy watching their respective school play an extra game or two.

79 are now eligible with three teams (UNC, Colorado and ULM) plus maybe Army still possible.

With either the Big10 and the ACC putting one team in the Playoff, there will be an opening in Detroit (Lane Bowl).

That should guarantee 6 MAC teams in for sure.

What is our 2nd backup bowl arrangement this year for the MAC?

Well I hope the bowl selection committees look at the fact that we are the only MAC team that won their bowl game in the past two years. You can't say that Ohio doesn't come to play wherever they get selected for a bowl.

Attendance or the amount of money certain leagues and schools guarantee in ticket sales. There is a difference.

Both, probably. Ticket sales mean money, but it is also true that a key reason that cities sponsor bowls is to promote tourism. The main reasons for bowls are:
1. Promote tourism to the host city
2. Advertise the host city and the sponsor
3. Content for ESPN to use to fill air time

I think it's all the above, but also sometimes conferences will lobby for their teams that have better conference records or that finished stronger than other of their teams. I don't think it'll be an issue with the MAC this year. There are only 79 bowl-eligible teams so all eight bowl-eligible MAC teams should get a bowl. I expect Liberty to be the odd man out. They're independent with no bowl ties, they're only win of consequence was Buffalo, and two of their wins were vs 1AA schools.
