Our season will hinge on how the QB(s) pan out. We're pretty strong at all the other positions but it all starts with the QB and our returning QB(s) have little experience. Kent, Fiami and Buffalo have the key cogs of their offenses coming back (Crum, Gabbert and Jaret Patterson, respectively) so if we're slow to develop or have injuries at QB, we may be lucky to finish in the top three in the East.

I believe that it's all about the defense. Can the defense get stops when it needs them? Ohio has had the best offense in the MAC in the last three years, but no MAC championships because the defense couldn't get stops at critical times. Give me an OK offense, but a defense that gets stops, and I'm happy.

I have no doubt that the offensive line will be good, and the receivers and running backs will be good. I expect the young QB to make a few mistakes, but be fine, so I expect the offense to score points in the mid 30's again. On the other hand, a defense that crushes bad teams like BG and Akron, but which can't get stops in close games will make the offense irrelevant.

The best defenses were 2006 and 2009, but they didn't have much offense to go with them. 2011 and 2016 were probably the best chances, because they had both an offense and a defense. I feel pretty confident that the offense will be adequate next year, but the defense will need a major change from the last couple years before I feel confident.

The 2009 offense was at least decent with theo Scott. Which made it that much more disappointing when they were ineffective in the title game and bowl versus Marshall.

2020 schedule looks like a 4-4 or 5-3 MAC season ... and probably 2-2 or 3-1 non conference.

So probably 8-4 or 7-5

Those numbers are definitely under what I would have guessed that year and maybe that's because of the last couple games vs NIU and Temple. we had some clunkers, including 11 vs Kent, 19 vs Akron, and our FCS game, which would normally be an outlier and average booster, yielded only 28 vs. Cal Poly. Still, only 10 in the MAC title game and one offensive td against Marshall were big letdowns, especially after how we finished.

To me, Ohio needs a defense like 2006 or 2009-11, combined with an offense like the last few years, and they will be good to go.

Toledo released the MAC portion of their schedule and once again the Redhawks are missing from Toledo's schedule. The last time Miami and Toledo played was 2011. Someone please tell me how the MAC office allows that to happen. So two teams are in the same 12 team conference and they don't play one another for ten years at best? Whoever is in charge of scheduling for this league shouldn't get paid. With the MAC office doing the scheduling it may be 2025 before Toledo and Miami play again.

This isn't new news, the exact same thing actually happened to Ohio a few years ago with Ohio not playing Toledo. The two hadn't played each other longer than any other matchup between two schools from the MAC.

Maybe so but not that long of a gap recently. In 2007 and again in 2010 the Bobcats played the Rockets before taking a break and playing again in 2016. It seems with 12 league teams now, the MAC office could get the schedules on a regular rotation even if Ball St-Miami and BG-Toledo are close rivals and play yearly.

After quarterback, my next greatest concern is the kicking game. We are losing two very reliable ones.

For the first time in a long time, I think the East will be significantly better than the West next year.

In the Cover 4, the corner usually doesn't have a safety over the top. In the early years of the Cover 4, Ohio tried to jam the receivers, which is what Narduzzi does with the defense. Unfortunately, Ohio got burnt deep a number of times, so they started backing off the receivers, which prevents most the times they get burnt deep, but creates other problems.

It's also worth pointing out that the 2005 and 2006 teams both had an amazing number of defensive backs who would end up signing at least free agent contracts with the NFL.
2005 - Dion Byrum, TJ Wright, Mark Parson, Thad Turner, Michael Mitchell
2006 - TJ Wright, Mark Parson, Thad Turner, Michael Mitchell, Julian Posey

Note: even if you don't count Turner, since he didn't switch to CB until 2007, both teams had 4 future NFL or near NFL players in the defensive backfield.

Correct. Cover 4 turns into man after 15 yards. Hence why Dion and TJ played closer to the line and trusted Koenig and Ward for over the top help...with a young Mike Mitchell over the top too. Teams were scared to throw the ball in those lanes. Not sure what happened after we graduated but you were not throwing slants and TE seams on the 2006 squad. (Which is what's burning our current Defense over the past 2 years). Think about the games that were on the line where NIU, CMU, Miami TEs made big 3rd down plays to seal games.

Basically, we ran more press zone coverage to make the defense think we were in man.
