Mid70's Cat, last night I sent an e-mail to Coach Fox's Administrative Assistant, the one who prepares all the mailers, and information, the same one who would send any LOI's to recruits. Below is the e-mail and Ms. Dena Smiley's response:

We are a Division I Football team who competes in the Pioneer league. Therefore we do not give our athletic scholarships. Most of our players earn academic and merit scholarships.

FYI, LC: That LB from Nelsonville, a math major, is now Rep. Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville) in the Ohio House of Representatives, and is slowly climbing up the leadership ladder in the party. He has been very active in sponsoring legislation to fight the opioid drug crisis among other things.

No, that site isn't wrong. It's just worded in a funny way. It says that they do offer scholarships to football players, and then it clarifies what types of scholarships they do offer. "Need-based and academic scholarships are available for student-athletes."

So, that's it. Yes, football players can earn scholarship, but the scholarships are based on need, or on academic ability, and are not based on football ability.

LC .. you seem to 'get it' Only point I'll disagree a bit on is that they often are offering the scholarship to the kid based on his athletic ability and he happens to also be a decent student. It's in some ways a way to deal with a more complex issue when a school wants to be competitive in a particular sport.

To answer your question, by my junior year I got through school on a football scholarship, I can document that, so yes, I was on a football scholarship. My first 2 years I paid my own way, my last two years I received a tuition waiver and room and board check that came from Mac and Coach Lichtenberg. So, there you go! I also have 4 Varsity letters from OHiO, and am a member of the Varsity O Club.

I found the information on how they don't give out football scholarships on Valpo's site. Unless I am missing something, you provided no information directly from Valpo. Sportsrecruits.com wrote a site on their own about Valpo's football program. It isn't affiliated with Valpo anymore than BobcatAttack is affiliated with Ohio. Now, if Valpo is looking at a football player and saying he is very close to meeting the need scholarship and Valpo cheats and breaks its own conference rules and gives some form of aid that they normally wouldn't to that I cannot speak. But it is not a football scholarship. That would be a straight-out clear cheating.

Mid70s, 99 percent of the time I agree with your posts. I consider you one of the most sane posters on this website. I guess that might be damning by faint praise! ;-) Seriously, I do think you are one of the most responsible posters on BA. But, this time you are dead wrong. BTC is correct. The link you provided is to a spam site trying to lure in prospective recruits to sign up for their "services" to get a scholarship. It's a very shady operation. I checked thoroughly and BTC is also correct that Valpo only offers academic scholarships for football. Now, it is correct, I'm quite certain, that it is sometimes easier for a promising RB, OL, MLB, etc. to get an academic scholarship than for an equally academically qualified non-athlete. The first college I went to for the first semester of my freshman year was Wittenberg, a Div III school. They had a similar kind of approach. One of my four roommates was a football player, who had an academic scholarship. I had no scholarship, even though I was academically at least on his level if not a little better in terms of my high school grades and SAT scores.
