Boy, that news release makes it sound like he was personally responsible for every win OHIO has had in the last decade. Can we ever replace him? Will our program be going to hell in hand basket without him? These are burning questions that demand a separate thread on BA, along with another thread about the woes of our strength training program.

I wish him well, but he was the TE coach here so not sure how much input he had with the offense.

He was a decent recruiter, but his assistant Covington does a nice job and should slide into that position. I like Covington’s Twitter action where he connects with recruits looking for that D1 shot.

Good move for Brian in terms of a step up in program plus a reall nice area to live.

To OCF's point, coaching bios are examples of unbelievable embellishment. While generally factually true, they do stretch the point quite often especiallly when it comes to athlete "advancement" to the pros. I've seen lots of these where the athlete went to the pros but never actually made the team or played a down.

Anyway, congrats to Brian. He'll love the Boone area.

A program that has been nationally ranked at the end of last season (#18), 4 straight Conference Championships, and 5 straight bowl wins might be a step up from OU. A good friend of mine went to App, I've seen a lot of propaganda from his Twitter feed

I'd call it a big step up. Facilities, the only game in town, institutional committment, and name recognition. You'd never see a paper 87 miles away with an article on OU hiring an assistant coach.

Billy is correct as that App State asst. salary pool of $1.55 million is much higher than Ohio pays. Ex Bobcat DB coach Anthony Perkins is paid $175,000 at Colorado State and he is one of the lowest paying asst. coaches on that staff.

You didn't even mention four double-digit win seasons in their last five, four straight conference championships and two Power 5 wins in one season. It's absolutely a step up.

Pretty campus, nice rural town, and a good party school - so on those fronts its more of a lateral move.

MAC football assistant salaries have skyrocket from what they were 20 or 30 years ago, but pale in comparison to other nearby Division I schools. Two high school coaching colleague of mine were offered two assistant jobs by MAC schools nearly 30 years ago. One coach was at a Catholic school like me and took it, before becoming a head coach at a public school a couple of years later and substantially increasing his salary. The other coach was at a suburban school, but turned down the offer after learning what the salary would be. Back then the MAC used a lot of young single guys, grad assistants, or old guys/retiree types to fill those jobs. Things are a lot better now, but we are always playing catch up to much better budgeted Division I schools in the area.

We have lucked out in a sense, due to the stability of Coach Solich and his staff. We are going to have to make some hard decisions when Coach Solich retires. Are we going to get into the arms race or be content to try and be competitive with much lower salaries, budgets etc?

There are teachers on this board that I’d guarantee make more than 3 OHIO coaches today.

The point was/is OHIO does not pay assistant coaches very well, I used the comparison because many can relate to that metric. So some of these career moves are kind of no brainer’s. Unlikely a coach is going to get another 10 years out of Ohio, going to App State with a young guy who can move up can lead to an even bigger payday in a couple years.

In football, App State is without question a step up from Ohio. In other sports, not so much. App State puts their eggs in the football basket.

Sorry, wasn't trying to make a comparison but was just stating two unrelated facts. That said and to your point, here are the comparisons for the two districts in question plus Newark which is the home of one of our esteemed teacher posters. Also, 18 years isn't a particularly long tenure. Under current STRS rules, a teacher retiring after August 1, 2026, must be 60 and have 35 years of service for full retirement benefits.

Athens average salary $67,032, average years of teaching is 15, and the percentage of teachers with a Masters (a big determinate of a teacher's salary placement) is 80.8%

Dublin average salary $82,741, average years of teaching is 15, and the percentage of teachers with a Masters is 71.5%

Newark average salary $57,307, average years of teaching is 13, and the percentage of teachers with a Masters is 58.5%

With Frank on a two year contract, assistants need to be pragmatic about their own futures.
