These are kinda surprising. I'm not sure Crum was a bad choice for first team. I'd like to see the thought process around Hagan. Motley's inclusion is surprising. I give them props for selecting Luehrman.
Most selections are based on opinion, and perhaps votes. PFF is a more mechanical selection. They grade every play, every week, and selections are based on each player's total score for the year. Their criteria is not necessarily the same as the coaches' criteria, but it is presumably done consistently across all weeks and teams. Given that it is a tremendous undertaking to grade every player in every play in every game, I'm guessing that it must be at least partially automated, but I don't know. I can't even imagine how they could do it.
As a comparison, here are their Preseason picks, which were based on last year's scores, so you can see who did better than expected, and who did worse:
https://www.pff.com/news/college-pff-preseason-2019-all-m... First Team: Rourke, Evans, Hagan, Zervos
Second Team: Kittrell
Third Team:
Honorable Mention: Pleasants, I. Motley, Hudson, Hampton
They didn't list second team for kickers and punters, nor any picks for kick returners in the preseason poll. Thus there are no comparisons for Knock or Farakas.
Compared to preseason predictions, six did better, five did worse:
Two positions higher than predicted: Grimes, Luehrman, I. Motley
One position higher than predicted: Pleasants, Cox, Hooks
One position lower than predicted: Rourke
Two positions lower than predicted: Zervos
Three positions lower than predicted: Kittrell, Hagan
Four positions lower than predicted: Evans
