Ohio FB: Frank Solich and Ohio have agreed in principle to a contract extension/amendment. OU not talking details yet, but Solich will be back in 2020 and probably longer. “It’s all been taken care (of). I’ve signed it."

Does this help?

Basically, I would've been stunned if they had not signed him to the extension. I am sympathetic toward the argument against him (we know what that is). However, he probably has earned the right to leave the way he wants. A 4-8 season would likeley change that.

It will be interesting to see how long the extension is for.

So,does this count as Julie's first coaching decision ?

It's certainly the safe decision. She's not going to get a lot of heat for it regardless of what happens. On the other hand, if she replaced him, and ended up with results like Akron got from replacing Bowden, it would not be a good start for her.

I'm not sure how I feel about an extension. I certainly think Coach Solich has earned it and it's the logical decision. So obviously it makes sense and from that standpoint I like it.

However, I can't help but see Solich as a "lame duck" coach. I mentioned this in the recruiting page. I think when it comes to recruiting, Solich is a "lame duck" in a sense. By that I mean that I really doubt that he will still be the coach, even under the best of circumstances, when new recruits finish their careers at Ohio. Does anyone foresee Solich lasting more than the next 4 years? In 4 years he will be 79. What does he tell potential recruits? They have to figure that even if he recruits them now, he more than likely won't be the coach when they graduate. If I were rival coaches, I would look at that and use it to my advantage on the recruiting trail.

I may very well be wrong (again), but I just see his impending retirement as a recruiting weakness.

Perhaps the recruiting is already happening. Only one year but very low number of all MAC players this season. Have to wait till next to see if it is the start of a trend or just a one year aberration. (or have the prior several years been below the Solich average of all Mac players?)

What is the likelihood that the next head coach is Albin? If so, this is not a big deal. Although, I'm not saying that Albin should be the successor.

Not sure how so called experts can qualify a small recruiting class as being below average just because they are small in numbers. They don’t know the players or how many schollies were given to players who deserved them.

He is our man for the foreseeable future. Might as well embrace winning and getting to bowls every year while the Sean Lewises of the world run for money after 3 years only to send Kent back to obscurity.

And yet they will win MAC Titles. That’s the name of the game right?

I don’t want to hear how we go to Mobile or Boise, just win in Detroit the first weekend in December and that will matter more #LittleMonroe

Solich has turned Ohio Football into a nationally recognized brand and you are expecting him gone? With what money I ask? I suspect some of thee of being spoiled Buckeye fans from up North, who have lost out on yet another chance to play for a National Championship, despite limitless funds and support. Off thee to Oxford (in Ohio), you undeserving Bobcat rogues!!!

Should bring in an assistant coach, this year or next, as the head-coach-in-waiting - to transition from Solich to the next era.

I nominate Tyler Tettleton

It was nice to see Frank stick around for 100 wins and with the QB he had coming back in 2019 it made sense to coach that team. He's even set the MAC record for wins. At this point I'm not sure what we are gaining from his name.

I'd say its fairly high at this point with the financial state of the university at this moment. Athletics has gone underground it seems to avoid more scrutiny. Think about the new bar in the Convo. There was never an announcement about it until it happened. The financial situation at OU can turn from deficit to surplus quite quickly though with a larger than expected enrollment.

I don't think there is a recruit in OHIO, Nebraska, or anywhere else who tells friends and family that OMG "THE Frank Solich" reached out and is recruiting them. His name and integrity may carry cache with HS coaches. Alumni in general appreciate him - but as I have mentioned before, the casual Ohio alumni in the Carolinas that I have spoken with believe that he has already won at least one MAC championship.

Why is this always the argument? Who's to say that a new coach at Ohio couldn't just build upon what Frank has already laid a foundation for? And then his successor keeps up the winning tradition?

I don't see a trail of tears up in Kalamazoo after PJ Fleck took them to the Cotton Bowl. I'm tired of this notion that Ohio will just sink back into a blackhole of D1 football simply because Frank Solich leaves, or a 3 year coach who takes Ohio to a NY6 game leaves.

This was Julie's 1st coaching decision, and it was an easy one. A no brainer. Politically, the right decision as well.
I am sure she also looked at the overall costs associated in making a change; new coach and staff relocation costs on top of higher compensation contracts.

I would have liked to be a fly on the wall during these discussions with Frank. Was he asked about the teams positioning for the near future?

I would like to hear from LC on his thoughts relative to next years outlook.

This is probably not the best example you could have chosen. WMU's historical win percentage since 1869 is 55.6%. Since 1960, WMU has won 52.5% of the time.

Under Lester, so far, WMU has won 52.6% of the time. No, he's not been a disaster, but what he has done is revert to the historical norm for WMU. I think that if you looked at a lot of examples, you'd find that that is what normally happens, things revert to the historical norm.

I know we have this debate about Frank staying or going all the time, but I really think it's a moot discussion.

Unless there is an absolute disaster or scandal on or off the field, Frank will decide when he's not the coach of the Bobcats.

And while 6-6 and a trip to the Potato Bowl fell below the expectations for 2019, it certainly does not qualify as a disaster or scandal.

I doubt that the administration and president care much what is said on this message board. They will make decisions based on what is best for Ohio University.

We are lucky to have Frank in Athens. As long as he is willing to coach, keep him there.

There are frustrations but our program is in the best possible hands. My hope for 2020 is a MACC so he can hand off the program to someone who knows how to at least maintain.

You're just making my point even more clear, LC. WMU hasn't fallen into some black hole because PJ Fleck took a bigger/higher paying job. If Ohio reverts back to their norm as you call it, it's a .500 football team. Not far from where we are now, is it?
