In 2016 Mark Dantonio reworked his contract with MSU so he would get a $4.3 million longevity bonus if he were still the coach on January 16, 2020. The reworked deal came after MSU had three B10 championships in six years and a playoff berth. Since then, MSU has gone 27-24. His bonus kicks in today and must be paid by March 31. Goes to show the risk in setting up future deals based on past performance.

Caution....stirring the pot, but:

Is Frank the MAC's version of Dantonio?

(Minus the obvious scandal, which I'm thankful we're not hearing about anything of the sort in Athens)

About the same number of sexual assaults our President is accused of (fact), so hey, if he’s not accountable, why should a football player or coach be.

I don't think so. Over the last four seasons Solich averaged more than eight wins a season, while Dantonio averaged less than seven. Also I think Solich's bonuses were performance-based while Dantonio gets $4.3 million just for existing.

It's kind of the opposite to me. Michigan State had a few really good seasons and then a few really bad (by their standards). Ohio is consistently above average but not great.

Since 2015, they've both coached average to above average teams, and both have been to the conference championship game just once, both losing in that one appearance. Frank's teams average 8.2 wins a year since 2015, while Mark's average 7.8. Frank has won three bowl games (of 5) to Mark's two (of 4). Both have had recent so-called great recruiting classes that haven't panned out as well as expected. Plus, both teams wear green & white.

I see a few parallel's there.

Michigan State won their conference title in 2015 and haven't been back since. That was the year the lost to Bama in the College Football Playoff.

Four players involved in sexual assault . . . and one of them had rap sheet going back to before he was a teenager:

"When Michigan State recruited defensive end Auston Robertson, coaches reportedly knew of his sexual misconduct rap sheet, which dated back to when he was 11 years old, the Detroit News reported."

Another quote from the article, about the four superstars of questionable character:

"In the year that followed, Robertson, King, Corley, and Vance were all kicked off Michigan State's football team, and the man who recruited them, Curtis Blackwell, was fired over 'philosophical differences,' Dantonio said. Blackwell is now suing the university."

Looks like a case of plausible deniability. Does anyone really think that the HC didn't have any idea they were dealing with young men with very suspect moral compasses?

Didn't we bring in a guy of rather questionable character from somewhere in VA? I think his last name began with an H.

This is not comparable in the least to the situation at MSU. Michael Hinton had some anger management issues and some weed issues that unfortunately he could not overcome. He was never accused of the kinds of things that are alleged at MSU. Frank took a chance that the young man could turn things around in a new environment, and his best efforts failed. While Hinton was here, he actually did some good work with helping young children in Glouster. The situation at MSU in terms of the sexual assault and inappropriate sexual behavior has been going on for more than 20 years -- and not just with football players. The whole culture of the athletic department there has been corrupt. I see these latest developments as just the latest in a long line of transgressions. Some of these have come to light in recent years, some have not. I was aware of the funny business going on there about 20 years ago via confidential information I received in my official position at OU-COM. I'm not at liberty to go into detail. But, there's a lot that's not right at MSU.

I think Michigan State has bigger problems across the entire athletic department with all the recent scandals there to focus on, but I hear you, brother. A part of me is convinced that Dantonio will eventually do what Frank Solich did and settle with being a big fish in a small pond instead of continuing to drown in the Big Five ocean, especially since he does not appear to have the personality to Wow people in the broadcast booth. Ohio State seems so ahead of everyone else in the Big Ten in terms of the level of talent coming in. I just don't see how Dantonio competes with them and the likes of Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, and now Minnesota in terms of recruiting. If I am a five star prospect coming out of high school, I am not going anywhere cold. Period!

The search is over Mel Tucker of Colorado has taken the job, something I am somewhat surprised by since I think he had a good thing going at Colorado. There's some choppy waters to navigate in East Lansing, while I though he had things pointed in the right direction at Boulder. Time will tell.
