Voluntary or not, it's a good look at a place that is getting national press for laying off teaching staff.

Should have gone with the same 15% that the prez and provost took. That would have closed the door on criticism.

All schools are laying off teaching staff. How can you not when enrollment suddenly nosedives?

I believe so, yes, as long as furlough extends beyond a certain number of weeks.

The other thing to consider is how the wage reduction is done. If it's spread out over all 12 monthly checks, then I doubt if someone can get unemployment.

Edit: Just saw this on a friend's FB page. They are spreading the cuts out over the fiscal year.

As I recall, the way Strickland's administration did it in 2009 was to take a day's furlough pay out of one paycheck per month. We then could use accumulated furlough days as leave time when needed anytime throughout the year before we took other leave. That was done through an agreement with the state's unions.

Not the way these were done. As someone mentioned. It's basically a cut in pay without taking the percentage of the top of the contract. If you make x amount of money, you take the amount of days off (furlough) that equals 5-10% of your income. For most, I believe, it amounts to an extended Holiday break from work but the cut in pay will be seen over 12 months.

Right, but when you're slashing livelihoods left and right, it's NOT a good look to have a football coach and a basketball coach still making their half million coaching what are very questionable "revenue earning" spots. Don't get me wrong, I love Frank and OU football, but when you RIF 140 union positions, this is only fair.

Under Strickland, it was also use-it-or-lose-it leave. Unlike some other leave that could be carried over from one year to the next, unused furlough leave was lost at the end of the year.
