I was attending Ohio when this accident happened. I clearly remember that Marshall was scheduled to play @ Ohio the next week. At game time we held a memorial service in Peden.
Horrible accident.

First off, thanks for posting the video.

My wife and I attended the "Silencing Ceremony" a couple of years ago.

Very moving.

We also went to the Spring Hills Cemetery to pay our respects.

We're hoping to be able to go again for the 50th Annviversary.

In "We Are Marshall" they mention the game with O.U.

Its the scene where the announcer's son is listening to the end of radio broadcast,on his transistor radio, under a table in the living room.

I've posted before that I went to O.U. the year after the crash.I had a friend
who graduated with me in high school who played for the Young Thundering Herd.

I have an acquaintance whose brother was killed in the plane crash-Bob Harris, QB who was also from Cincinnati and played at Moeller High.

http://www.marshall.edu/special-collections/memorial/play...

His death took a major toll on her family and still does to this day. I know dozens if not hundreds of other people have similar stories.

I took a campus visit to Marshall in high school and there first learned of this tragedy. Has always touched a part of my heart since.

While the honor/memory of horrible things like this can be lost over time, I really applaud how well Marshall and Huntington work to preserve the memory of that team.

That young child under the table was Keith Morehouse, the current sports broadcaster for WSAZ-TV 3 in Huntington, WV. His father was one of the football broadcasters for Marshall at that time.

FYI: Ted was the starting QB for Marshall and Bob Harris was the backup QB. Bob was a starter at wide receiver or flanker on the team. Bob was too good of a player not to be on the field. Both were great athletes and more importantly, great people.

I have watched a lot of MU football over the years and I think Ted or Bob Harris were nearly as good as Chad Pennington. Chad had the advantage of having a great supporting cast. Ted and Bob were running for their lives most of the time after the ball was snapped.

Several of my cousins went to Lyndhurst High School with Teddy Shoebridge.

According to them,he was a much better baseball then football player, and was trying to decide whether to pursue a pro career in baseball or football.

My one cousin who knew him the best, always said the same thing about him being a great person.

I never realized just how close to the airport that crash occurred. I knew it happened as the plane was attempting to land but didn’t realize it was that close to the runway.

Yes, the plane clipped the tops of trees on a hillside on its descent to the runway. After multiple law suits by family members of those kilted, the NTSB for the first time its history (to that time) admitted that equipment malfunction could have been a contributing factor in a crash. Prior to this they had said it was solely pilot error. Neither the pilot nor co-pilot had ever flown into that airport before. And, there was certainly some pilot error involved. However, the co-pilot was calling out elevation readings during the descent and the readings he was calling out indicated that the plane was above the levels of the treetops. This information was recovered from the flight data recorder retrieved from the scene of the crash.

Tri-State Airport at the time of the crash did not have a glide-slope instrument landing system. It was installed a few years later. Also, the hilllside was leveled so that the approach to the runway is now not at such steep an angle.

I was in the same fraternity as Ted at MU and I always expected Ted to turn to MLB. I currently live on the coast near Southport, NC. I have a friend/neighbor who is from Lyndhurst and was a few years younger than Ted. My friend tells some great stories about Ted playing American Legion baseball. One of the stories he tells about Ted is when he hit a home run and the ball taking out the windshield of a new car at a dealership which was quite a distance from the fence. The dealership's owner found out Ted hit the ball and said no problem (I hope am retelling the story correctly). Ted could do no wrong in the town. Ted was a legend in Lyndghurst according to my friend who played basketball in college.

I am a grad of Marshall (just went to opening game against VMI last night) and went with my family at near age 5 to view leftover wreckage( after the big pieces were hauled away) as dad worked very close at then "Ashland Oil" I never forgot what my mind pondered, my families fixed jaw silence and the talk or mood for years after this happened. Anyway, I have been researching the victims at fair length and somehow became stuck on the "Moeller Trio". I visited their graves recently at "Gate of Heaven" and can't begin to imagine the depth of grief Bob's family suffered. Danny Deece's (pilot of ill fated DC-9) daughter Leslie Deece Jarvis is trying to put together a book of pics and memories for next years 50 year memorial that is held on Marshall's Campus. She would love anything pertaining to Bob, Jack or Mark. There is not a lot on Bob as far as family and friend recollections. I have found pics from Moeller and such on all three. If you happen to be in contact and feel that any family members are interested, you can send info to my email and I will forward. I understand if it is too much since the sibling is an acquaintance. This all resonated more with me after I raised boys and how precious they are to me.

Danny Deese was not the pilot of the plane, he was the charter coordinator. The pilot was Captain Frank H. Abbott Jr., the first officer was Jerry R. Smith, the stewardesses were Pat Vaught and Charlene Poat. Those four were the crew members. Mr. Deese was an employee of Southern Airlines, but not a crew member.

Who told you that Mr. Deese (not Deece) was the pilot? Did his daughter say that? She may have been very young when the crash happened, so it's possible she would be confused as to her father's role. I'm not trying to be critical. I'm just trying to supply facts. As soon as I saw your post, I knew that there was something wrong. I remembered that the pilot's last name was Abbott. I then pulled out my memorial edition of The Parthenon, of which I was the co-advisor, to confirm my memory and then looked up the additional information on the crew. Good luck with your project!

I am not sure why that I had the info incorrect as he is listed as "charter coordinator" on various web pages. I'm typically a little more careful with my postings and I apologize. I have a heart for this research and his daughters recent efforts and trying to gather help for the plight of their memory. Some pages exist in honor of the plane crash victims that shine light on their personalities (other than being victims of the plane crash)and I am reaching out in hope that people who knew Bob, Jack and Mark might have similar pics and great memories. Thank you for the correction as I need to get my titles straight.

I completely understand, Trish. It's easy to get a detail wrong, especially if you are relying on information from others. That's why it's always good to have multiple sources who can confirm your information.

I have no personal knowledge of the specific folks you are seeking information about. I know a good deal about Jeff Nathan, the sports editor of The Parthenon, and was recently successful in endowing a scholarship in sports writing in his name. A few years ago I was able to track down his younger brother, Don, who was very helpful in our efforts to raise the necessary funds to reach the endowment level for the scholarship. Jeff, by the way, was from Parkersburg, and the Parkersburg News & Sentinel made the only corporate contribution to our fund raising efforts. I could get you in touch with a man who used be the sports editor of the News & Sentinel and has done a good deal of research about the crash. He was the one who was most responsible for the News & Sentinel contribution as he arranged for me to meet with the management and top editors.
