I never realized just how close to the airport that crash occurred. I knew it happened as the plane was attempting to land but didn’t realize it was that close to the runway.
Yes, the plane clipped the tops of trees on a hillside on its descent to the runway. After multiple law suits by family members of those kilted, the NTSB for the first time its history (to that time) admitted that equipment malfunction could have been a contributing factor in a crash. Prior to this they had said it was solely pilot error. Neither the pilot nor co-pilot had ever flown into that airport before. And, there was certainly some pilot error involved. However, the co-pilot was calling out elevation readings during the descent and the readings he was calling out indicated that the plane was above the levels of the treetops. This information was recovered from the flight data recorder retrieved from the scene of the crash.
Tri-State Airport at the time of the crash did not have a glide-slope instrument landing system. It was installed a few years later. Also, the hilllside was leveled so that the approach to the runway is now not at such steep an angle.
