Also, schools can't require student-athletes to waive their legal rights regarding covid-19 in order to compete and can't reduce or cancel schollies of student-athletes who opt out of playing because of the virus.

This is going to cause a real numbers problem similar to public schools and kindergarten with many parents holding their kids until a real school year starts.

I presume that means the 85 limit will get bumped to 120 for 4-5 years, until the recruiting class of 2020 and the recruiting class of 2021 both use up their eligibility together? That's going to burden the schools with extra expense for years to come, even as revenues have dried up.

I’m pretty sure, based on what I’ve heard/read, that the schools aren’t required to take on extra Scholarships, or keep on scholarships who would otherwise have exhausted their eligibility. I think this give them the option to keep them on, but not the requirement (other than not being allowed to cut folks for opting out...you can find another reason to cut them, but it can’t be for opting out).

Some schools (eg Bama, OSU) will stretch this as far as they can for as long as they can, and carry 120+ for 8 years somehow (I’m probably exaggerating), but some others (Ohio, Rutgers, Kansas) will go over 85 for 1 year, if then

If you don't go over 85, that penalizes the class of 2021 as no schools will have many available. It will eventually resolve when the class of 2020 and the class of 2021 use the last of their eligibility in the same year. Yes, maybe they don't need to go all the way to 120, as not all the student athletes will want another year of school, but it does create a mess.

Yahoo sports had this explanation: Seniors will be permitted to return next year and not count against a sport's roster or scholarship limits. Underclassmen will get access to a waiver they can use to extend their careers, but beyond the 2021-22 academic year, those athletes will count against scholarship and roster limits.

So a lot depends on how many underclassmen opt for an extra year. An extra year taken by this year's junior class players would count against schollies and roster limits for the 22-23 year; by this year's sophomores for the 22-23 and 23-24 years; and by this year's freshmen for 22-23, 23-24 and 24-25. Plus any redshirts. And if no football happens in the spring (or a player doesn't play more than four games during a season), another year could be added to all of those.

Some schools may actually get a break if a player opts for early entry into the NFL draft.
