Last year, almost half of Kent State’s operating revenue total ($29,460,111) came from student fees (just over $14 million), which would decrease if student enrollment numbers are down in 2020-21.
Another major concern for the Kent State Athletic Department as a whole is the 2020 college football season. While most administrators believe that football will be played this fall, potential schedule alterations include the elimination of non-conference games. Contests could also be played in front of drastically reduced crowds as Power Five programs attempt to meet social distancing requirements.


Since 2018 the Kent State Athletic Department’s operating revenue has been bolstered by the decision to have its football team play three guarantee games against top Power Five programs each season. Kent State’s football program received $3.65 million in 2019 from guarantee games, which equates to 12.4 % of last year’s total operating revenue.
The Flashes have contracts to play 2020 games at Penn State (Sept. 5 season opener), Kentucky (Sept. 19) and Alabama (Sept. 26), and would earn $5 million for playing those contests this fall. However, if those games are not played, or are contested in front of reduced crowds, those contracts could be altered or voided altogether.
If Kent State receives only partial payout or no money at all for playing those three guarantee games, the consequences for the athletic program as a whole would be dire. Additional cuts would likely have to be made to help neutralize the loss of revenue.

So if the 19 pronostigators are correct and there are fewer fans let in, what will be the formula/method for making the decisions on who gets in and where they get to sit?

Marshall will be close to a sell out if they permit all fans to attend. Marshall always brings a bunch of fans.

They'll probably sell only reserved seats, no gen ad the day of the game, and do the social distancing through the sale of tickets. Just limit the number of tickets sold for each game (no problem for the MACtion games) and assign the seats with distancing in mind. Same would apply to the student section -- they have to pick up tickets in advance. At Peden the band might sit in the north end zone seats on both sides and wear masks between numbers.

As for the number of games, I expect some of the OOC games may be cancelled or filled with substitute teams because of reopening issues. If the expected second wave hits in November some conference and bowl games would be cancelled as well. I think most teams will play fewer than their full 12-game schedule, so bowl eligibility will likely be based on .500 or better records rather than the six or seven win requirement. Conference affiliations will likely be ignored for bowl games.

It's only the second week of June and football games aren't until September. If games are not played outdoors in the fall, then highly doubt that indoor athletics will have a season. Not sure anyone knows what will happen in three months.

What about the Senior Citizen, will he be allowed on the sideline? Will he have to wear a mask? When one of em screws up will it be a federal or state law he breaks by getting in the kids face?

I think it will vary by state. Some states will allow fans in a usual crowded setting, some distanced, some no fans, and I suspect a few states won't even allow the games to take place. Then within those states, there will be varying levels of implementation among the schools.

This is what we are currently dealing with on travel Baseball right now. It is the wild west of some teams not playing, some trying to play but not having a home field, and so on.
