Sounds like they're voting on just a 6 game schedule. That's just 1 crossover game which is just too few games. It may as well only be 5 games vs division foes only. The 1 crossover game is going to put some teams at a big advantage and some at a big disadvantage based on who it it. You'd assume Toledo comes off the table for BG. The.1 crossover game isn't enough, 8 games would be good and 7 at minimum would be decent, but 6 may as well be 5. This seems rather stupid IMO.
One reason might be that not all schools will play this fall (a la ODU in the CUSA). There's been discussion here that some schools have considerable safety or financial concerns. They might decide to beg off this fall. An eight-game schedule would be doable with at least nine teams but not with fewer than nine.

I'd like to see more than six, even if it means pushing the MACCG back to 12/19 (the Lions are home on 12/13, so their stadium might not be available that weekend). Much depends on what MWC might do and how that might affect potential bowl games. CUSA and Sun Belt both end Thanksgiving weekend and have their championships the next weekend. Since most of our potential bowl games are with those conferences, what they do could affect the MAC's thinking. A six-game MAC schedule beginning 10/23-24 would end Thanksgiving weekend. Finals also might be a concern; they're the week of 12/7 at Ohio.

Some schools are not fielding teams. Most schools are not playing 12 games. There will not be anywhere near enough teams reaching six wins to fill all of the eligible bowl spots. The Big Ten, when it released its schedule, allowed all of the schools that are not in the championship game to work out their own scheduling of a 9th opponent that week. They don't need the NCAA's permission to play another game that week as they had still not scheduled 12 games.

With there being so few non-conference games to compare teams from different conferences and not nearly enough eligible teams I expect that the NCAA will allow all of the bowls to either fill their conference contracts or take whoever they want. How else would that work unless they cancel most of the bowls for safety reasons? Then since we might be letting teams with really low win totals into bowls anyway it is easy to imagine the NCAA allowing everyone that does not make a bowl and has not played 12 games to schedule another game in late December. I don't know if that will happen but it would make a lot of sense.

The six game option if they do choose to play should not be a surprise. I don't see how there is time to do anything else at this point. Championship game qualification might be based on division games only and the cross-division game only used to break certain three way ties. If fact it is easy to imagine cross-division games being on the same week late in the schedule so that they can be cancelled and replaced with missed division games if needed.

Pac-12 to begin Nov 6 with a seven-game schedule that includes five divisional and two crossover games. One of the crossovers will be played the final weekend of the season. Championship game 12/18. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2020/09/24/pa... /

That leaves the MWC and the MAC as the only two 1A conferences without an announced beginning to the season. The MAC might be first out, last in.

Interesting article on this subject:

https://tinyurl.com/y6egryrd

Contains this line, that is not surprising, but is not what many other leagues are doing:

"Davies said no fans will be allowed to attend games if the MAC plays football in the fall."

“Hey, we’re going to allow as many fans as Eastern Michigan draws for a Wednesday night game,” said the commissioner.

I watched the Western Kentucky game yesterday and it seemed like more than 20% of the stadium was occupied.

I’d rather see fans allowed but just having Ohio football back is a good start.

That's the total number of fans who are at the game AND watching on TV.

The NCAA is considering letting teams be eligible for bowl games regardless of their record. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29964678... So the conferences will be able to fill all the bowl slots they've contracted for and the "P"s will likely fill any that are "at large" except for the one NY6 slot reserved for a G5 team. I think the Frisco Bowl is the only non-NY6 bowl that has "at large" openings, although there might be others. The B10 has had trouble filling all its slots in the past, but won't have that issue this year; they even have one less slot to fill with the cancellation of the Redbox Bowl vs the Pac-12. The upshot is that the G5 teams will probably fill their contracted bowl games but won't get into others, as they've done in the past. And the indies other than Army and BYU will probably be left out too.

Even number is good so each team at least gets 3 home dates. 6 is about the minimum number of games where this is even worth the effort.

It's 3pm on a Friday afternoon. If they announce good news re football, they've already wasted the news cycle for the day and week. Just incompetent from a comms strategy standpoint.

Somebody floated this by me today. it has no credibility, but the theory was with no fans ESPN and the league were in negotiations to make every game a midweek TV game. And the Hold up was a start date and that ESPN wanted a 7 game schedule.

I have saw nothing about this on internet and this guy did not tell me where he heard it. As far as i know he has no attachment to anything he works for coca cola.

The announcement made Channel 4's 6 pm newscast in Columbus.

Yes, the world was waiting with bated breath to hear about a possible Ball State-Northern Illinois football game.

Seriously. The announcement didn't even make the top 10 headlines on ESPN's college football page and garnered 6 posts on the board, which is devoted to MAC football. I don't think winning a news cycle factors into these things.
