Is there any way to subscribe to ESPN, say through watchESPN or some other method? I read that to subscribe to watchESPN that you have to have ESPN through a cable provider or some other platform. I don't have cable or any other platform with ESPN on it.

So that sounds like I won't be able to subscribe to watchESPN on my computer or smart phone, right?

What would be the best and quickest and least expensive means to get around this and subscribe?

This has been my method for a couple years that I have not been paying for TV service. There are all kinds of online TV services and basically all of them offer a free one-week trial. You can use an alternate email address and get another trial. I will be signing up for one Wednesday and it will cover both Wednesday's game and next Tuesday's game. Options include YouTube TV, Hulu Live, Sling, AT&T Now, Spectrum, fuboTV.

Get an android device (tablet) and download MOBDRO. Has ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU. You can even "gamecast" it to your TV.

Go through a provider and make sure you have ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Don't just get ESPN+. If you don't have one of the above and the game you want is one of those, ESPN+ will block it out.
I generally get YouTubeTV or AT&TNow for Maction. The easy way is just to pay month-by-month but I've got enough dummy email addresses between my wife and I to get the two week trials. ;)
