A funny and insightful ESPN piece on the 10th anniversary of Rufus taking down Brutus at the shoe: https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/30146667/b...

It examines the personal experience of the two individuals involved as well as the broader affect of the incident and the reasons it became such an international phenomenon, some of which we've discussed here.

A friend of mine who was The Bobcat in the '70s (before the mascot had an official name) especially liked the incident. He has a picture of a plush Rufus toy posed on the back of a plush Brutus toy.

I was coming here to post that, I had no idea that the mascot was not even a student at the time.

Woke up to a text from a long time friend and Penn State grad and fan. His comment - "one of the greatest things I've ever seen."

I just love how so many people have a fond memory of this. All it does for me is remind me how Terrelle Pryor gave us a swirly that day.

I always thought Rufus would be a U.S. senator by now. By the way, after the game I sent an email to our former athletic director asking him to go easy on the kid. His reply wasn't very friendly.

The AD had no authority over the kid. He wasn't even an OU student. If anythng, the kid pulled a good one on the AD and lots of other people.

Come on guys, don't be so sour. This was a classic college prank. If you liked Animal House, you had to love it. It will be remembered for decades. And the well-researched and written ESPN article gives it new life. If it was done against anyone else but Ohio State. it would simply, simply fade away. Go Bobcats.

Us being embarrassed by this is further proof we’re not a big time program.

An SEC school would’ve bronzed the incident and placed it in front of their stadium.

And if Brutus or Zippy or any other mascot would have done this to Rufus, I bet the board would not be sooo excited about this. So much for treating others how you want to be treated.

You are right, Billy The Cat. But it didn't happen to us. It happened to Ohio State. And that is the total beauty of the prank. I don't often make comments here (70 over the past 15 years) but this incident should be remembered fondly. Final say. Go Bobcats.

People in plush, padded outfits wailing on each other is funny.

Full stop. No exceptions.

If Zippy ambushed Rufus, his giant tail flopping as he squared up a form tackle, I’d cackle so hard. It’s why NCAA Football had mascot games.

If you don’t agree you’re a terrible hang or aspiring assistant principal.

We’re cheering guys weighing 280 pounds running 4.5’s as guided missiles giving each other CTE, but the equivalent of two afterprom attendees in sumo suits is a shameful, shameful act.

He was wrong. He shoulda been punished. It’s still funny as hell.

Put that head on and let me punch you in the face and tell me it does not hurt.

Yep, you're not elite unless you act like a douchebag in front of a large crowd. Bet I know who you're voting for.

I'm one of the minority who never liked this incident. I was in the stadium that day, and what I mainly remember is that OSU handed us our a$$es on a silver platter.

I thought it was a classless move.

Had it been a sanctioned university move, I'd agree. The fact that it was a kid who wasn't even an OU student pulling the biggest scam in shoe history, you have to remember when you were 20 and just chuckle.

Agree totally. If you have even the sense of humor of a Prussian, you’ve got to laugh at this prank. UMich’s band even used a skit based on it later in the season.
