MAC Championship: Ohio vs Toledo

MAC Champion: Ohio

Ohio has arguably been the best team in the MAC the last 5 years, it just doesn't have a MAC Championship to show for it. I believe when that next title comes, they'll start coming in waves there after. This is the first time in several years where Ohio isn't wearing the bull's-eye in the East, and I think it's the perfect role for them this time because no one is going to want to play them. The biggest keys to Ohio getting to Detroit are Buffalo simply can't win in Athens, and Ohio also caught a nice break by avoiding Toledo in the 6-game original crossover schedule (OU was schedule to play UT in the original schedule). This year has been beyond out of whack, and it's the perfect recipe for Ohio finally kicking down the door to win a MAC title.

Ohio has strength up the middle.

On D it’s the D guys Daxson and Dorsa.

On O it’s two headed QB strength....the R guys Rogers and Rourke with one maybe winning the starting job.

The best part of the middle would be the RBs with maybe 4 seeing PT and all 4 are explosive.

OUr receiving corps is also at least 5 or 6 deep.

Quick OUtside LBs help cement OUr D.

Some say OUr DBs might be suspect but on paper those are OUr deepest positions.

I like the first place prediction and will point out maybe one area of concern and that may be DE. A poor pass rush will kill you. We gave returning starters but they need to step it up. I look for Conrad and Evans to have their best years. We need some depth and Bryce Dugan from my old Clermont County haunts may be the man. He’s short but carries 250 pounds and tore it up in high school.

PS

A big shout out to OUr O line with lots of experience and a decent coach.

Checking the MAC Championship history.

Wow, I didn't know: Marshall hasn't been in the MAC since the early 2000's and OHIO still has played two championship games less.

About time to make a run like the Herd, NIU or Central where OHIO plays in and wins over a number of years.

Strength is the running backs and until there are numerous drive stops and no MAC career games by enemy receivers, the DB's are opposite the running backs on the strength chart.

In the East, its going to be the Flashes in the championship--here's why:
2015 BGSU
2016 OHIO
2017 Akron--yes, who'd a believed it
2018 Buffalo
2019 Miami
2020 the team missing from the East lineup.

Will you just stop? A case can be made that we were the best team in 2018 and 2017 and just tripped up late against inferior competition. There's no case to be made those other three years.

There's easily a case for last year. Ohio was a play away from being in the MAC Championship game instead of Miami. Some computer rankings rated Ohio as the best team.

I’m just curious, do we get a sign to hang on the Peden Walls?

We were 1-3 at home in the conference. There is no case to be made.

Which is why I am tempering my enthusiasm for the season. Albeit close losses, but losses nonetheless. Until Frank finally breaks through and hoists a MACC tropy, I won't believe that it's possible.

It someone wants to predict a MAC title every season I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with it.

But from my perspective I don't think its too important whether Frank wins one or if he doesn't. The question to me would be will he upon retirement give a gift on exit for a training table another facility that could help the program long term. On the other side of Peden across from the weight room to make the stadium symmetrical (w/ bathrooms/concessions for the exterior). It would be nice to squeeze 1 more facility like that in.

Otherwise I don't think his record from this point on is necessarily important like it would be for the next staff coming in having to prove itself.

One thing we have going for us is that all but one game is against the East and we just about always do well against the division. One drawback is that three of our four toughest opponents are on the road, which doesn't make it easy even without crowds.

FWIW, CBS has added the MAC to its full rankings of all 127 1A teams that are playing this fall. Here's how they see it going into the season:

East
Buffalo (72)
Ohio (89)
Fiami (106)
Kent (115)
Akron (123)
BG (125)

West
Toledo (84)
BSU (93)
CMU (95)
WMU (99)
EMU (119)
NIU (121)

Fiami may be underrated. They'll have defensive issues but they should be better than half the West.

MAC coaches poll has Fiami and Toledo in the MACCG; Ohio 3rd in the East. https://getsomemaction.com/news/2020/10/27/miami-toledo-s...

One coach did pick Ohio to win the East, but Akron also was chosen by one coach, so ....
