Those who know me know that I'm not a fan of that team in Columbus, Ohio. Having said that (Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld hate that saying as much as I hate that team mentioned above), I've been thinking about these football players who opted out of playing this season, left school and more than likely stopped taking classes. Now, with the big 10 and others deciding to play games this fall, some of these same players are opting back in. My question is about their academic eligibility. I'm not too naive to think that the schools won't find a way around this but it only adds to how football/basketball is running these universities and not the other way around. And in my opinion, that's not a good thing.

Eligibility is based upon your previous semester and credit towards a degree. Get ready for this very very very rigorous set of standards:

By the START of sophomore year, you must:
have a cumulative GPA of 1.8
have completed 36 units
By the END of sophomore year, you must:
declare a major
By the START of junior year, you must:
have a cumulative GPA of 1.9
have completed 72 units (40 percent of your total degree requirements)
By the START of senior year, you must:
have a cumulative GPA of 2.0
have completed 108 units (60 percent of your degree requirements)
By the START of a fifth year, you must:
have a cumulative GPA of 2.0
have completed 144 units (80 percent of your degree requirements)

For some reason, reading that list made me think of Andy Katzenmoyer.

They don't offer Andy's major anymore since Longaberger went under.

Good one!

But really, most of the students by that time were switching from Andy's major to Tattoo Art or Deliverer of Envelopes.

They also no longer offer the class he took in summer school to regain eligibility. Remember that classic course? No, it wasn't music appreciation, or Walter Seifert's famous Introduction to Public Relations, it was (drum roll) AIDS Awareness. I'm sure it was an extremely rigorous course that probed into all that was then known about AIDS and was probably taught by top medical school faculty. NOT!

I’m glad OHIO offers no classes that lack rigor.

How many Ohio athletes took an Æthelred Eldridge class and doodled on paper plates for a 400 level class?

I wonder if any of them signed up for a Klaus Eldridge Math or CS class by mistake.

How many of you know that Jim Eldridge, his birth name, played football for the University of Michigan? He was a QB. According to his x-wife (now deceased) he was not a starter, but played a lot. Somewhere I have a team picture with him in it. He used to live two houses down from where we lived on Second Street. In those days everyone thought he looked like Robert F. Kennedy. Maybe he had a soft spot in his heart for football players. Wouldn't surprise me.

I had Klaus Eldridge for CS 238 (Assembly Language). Great guy, and I enjoyed the class a lot! He could take challenging topics and explain them in plain language that was easy to understand.

He was always easily recognizable by his beret, white turtleneck, and work vest -- as well as by the fact that he vaguely resembled another Klaus! 🎅🏻

Never had him for a class, but with the description you provide here, I certainly saw him plenty around town.

E. Eldridge was certainly a unique guy. I worked as a manager at Galbreath Chapel where he reserved time regularly for his oratory work.

Wasn't Golf part of Katzenmoyer's rigorous course load, too?
