Vandy's interim HC is Todd Fitch who is from Bellaire, Ohio. He played for the Big Reds in the late 70's and early 80's.

Vanderbilt is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Whoever they get will be fired in four years. At this point, go get someone young and hungry. If they want to trot out the same playbook I wish them well.

You could say this same thing on just about any team facing an uphill battle in recruiting and also on-field play against traditional powers (Rutgers in the Big Ten East, Kansas in the Big 12, even South Carolina in the SEC East). These schools have to come up with different ways of recruiting, scheduling and style of play to even break .500 most years.

To that effect, I'm amazed more teams in the basement of their current conference don't try to adapt the option to throw a wrench into everyone else's schedule. it worked for Georgia Tech for years and got them to Orange Bowls. (Granted, the ACC Coastal has been dreadful.)

It (the option), until you have success then everyone wants you top open up and recruit athletes that can get you in the National Championship picture. Coach Johnson ran into this at GT, Grobe ran into this at Wake after he went to the end one.

Yeah it seems to be a "strike while the iron is hot" way to play, but not sustainable long term. But if you're someone like Vandy? Why the hell not? You're never gonna out recruit anyone anyway.

GT was in a weird scenario where they sit in a hotbed of Atlanta recruiting and felt that pressure. I'm not sure Vandy would ever get to that point.

FWIW Army's Jeff Monken was very interested in the South Carolina job before they went with Beamer.

Indiana defensive coordinator Kane Wommack goes back to SBama as HC. He was DC at SBama before moving to IU. He's the youngest HC in 1A (33 years old).

Really surprised to see this many pulling the trigger in a year where you'd expect budget problems. Auburn maybe not so much, but some of these small schools for sure.

Malzahn's firing reminds me of the firings of Earl Bruce and Frank. Both had excellent winning pcts and won big games. Both were deemed unworthy of continuing.

Gus didn't make a lot of friends at Auburn. Especially the ones who write the big checks. They've been wanting to get rid of him for years, but they couldn't because of the wins over Alabama.

CBS says Luke Fickell's name has come up for the Illinois job. They also mention Buffalo's Leipold, Toledo's Candle, Kent's Lewis and Dave Clawson.

Hugh Freeze is apparently on Auburn's list, according to CBS.

Some good info here for anyone interested in some of these coaching changes, and even ones that haven't happened yet that could (Oregon and Tennessee).

Virginia Tech sticking with Justin Fuente.

AD Whit Babcock stuck his foot in his own mouth by saying "most that threaten to pull their money don't donate that much" when referring to fans who wanted him gone.

Mario Cristobal of Oregon, Tom Allen of Indiana and Jamey Chadwell of Coastal Carolina all sign extensions with their respective schools. One assumes these include large buyouts amidst all these new coaching changes.

I think that Pruitt may require someone over Fulmer to happen. Phil is as stubborn as they come and he certainly doesn't want to look like he whiffed, especially after the foolish extension he gave Pruitt back in the late summer.

I think that Jeremy is going to have to pull quite the rabbit out of his hat next year though to make it to year 5. His mismanagement of the QB position may be his ultimate downfall-although the Vols were woeful in just about every category on both sides of the ball this year.
