Isn’t the entire point of realignment wild speculation on the internet?

If you really want me to get optimistic, let me tell you how I plan to convince the SEC to accept Ohio purely to cannibalize the recruiting efforts of OSU... (I swear, I had a dream where this happened and it was awesome)

OU and Texas formally submitted their request letter to the SEC today.

Also, I read elsewhere that games not involving OU or Texas pulled about the same TV rating as an AAC game. So if you're Cincinnati do you really wanna join that? What's the benefit?
If you mean joining the crippled Big 12 - there is no reason.

If you mean joining one of the new super conferences - I can give you tens of millions of reasons.
The former. Of course they would join the super.
It depends who is staying in the "new" Big 12. Maybe I'm jaded by considering basketball, but from a basketball perspective I think that'd be an extremely attractive league for Cincinnati and "not bad" for football.
Unfortunately basketball has never been the driver in a lot of these decisions. You can't do much better than Kansas, TxTech, OkSt and Baylor in that regard.

And I'm afraid they'll run into the same issues that WVU has with the league in regards to travel. But if a few other local schools were added maybe it won't be so bad.
Here is my Super-Optimist vision to bail on the MAC:

East
UConn
Buffalo
UMass
Temple
WVU
Ohio
Louisville
Cincy

West
Memphis
Tulane
SMU
Houston
Texas Tech
Oklahoma State
Kansas
Kansas State

Why would anyone want the Athens TV market? They wouldn’t. Most of our alumni are in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. It’s time to stop pretending our TV market is Athens and Nelsonville and acknowledge we have some Bobcat fans who would prefer to watch the Bobcats over the Buckeyes around the rest of the state.
Well, I don't think anything like this will happen now, but years ago the MAC blew a deal that had Louisville and Cincinnati ready to join the MAC. It was a big headline in newspapers around the area -- including the Columbus Citizen-Journal (anybody remember that one?). However, the deal fell through because at the last minute the MAC Daddies refused to increase the MAC football scholarship number to the then national D1 limit of 105. In UC's case, of course, it was a chance to rejoin the MAC. This was back in the days when the MAC was a seven team league with Ohio, Toledo, BGSU, WMU, Kent State, Miami, and Marshall. These additions would have made it a nine-team league. I was so excited when this was announced, and I felt crushed when it fell through a few days later. I won't get my hopes up again, and it seems much less logical and possible today than it did back then. Louisville was much less a power program in football and basketball at that time, and Cincinnati had not yet tasted the glory of the Big East and BCS football. I think that boat has sailed.
Very interesting. Did not know any of this!

Hey if you wanna get silly, at least be a little bit realistic.

Conference-USA blows up and the remaining parts are spread to the MAC, Sun Belt, and upcoming new WAC. Army decides they want to join a conference because of the new playoff structure.

Calling this 16-team conference BIG MAC, sponsored by McDonalds.

POD 1: Kent State, Akron, Buffalo, Army
POD 2: Miami, Toledo, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan
POD 3: Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Ball State, Northern Illinois
POD 4: Ohio, Marshall, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee

In this scenario Ohio is probably getting screwed the most because they don't maintain any of their natural rivalries. But this makes it easiest on travel for everyone.

Nine game conference schedule, playing everyone in your POD every season. Then you play two opponents from every other POD on a rotation schedule.

I would REALLY like to get back into the same conference as Marshall. Let bygones be bygones for the good of OHIO

Introducing the 20 Team SEC.

Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Texas A&M
Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State
Alabama. Auburn, Tennessee and Vanderbilt
Georgia, Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina
Ohio, West Virginia, Clemson, Florida State

Pitch to the SEC a plan expanding Peden to 50,000 to make it happen.
Just tell the SEC we can help cannibalize OSU giving Bama a better chance in the playoffs every year. It’s so crazy it just might work.

Frank was on the press conference talking about wanting to be a regular Top 25 program and one of the best in the nation. If that is where you want to go I think you've got to seriously consider moving up conferences.

There was a time when Ohio was invisible to ESPN but we've played in 11 bowls and 8 NCAA tournament games since 2005, not to mention 12 years of weeknight football. The football program has done better in a rising era of opportunity which says a higher level is possible if we move up.

I nominate BTC as the new SEC commissioner. He's only one here visionary enough to have advocated long and loud for years for that stadium upgrade. He is a man among boys and leader like Moses and a prophet like Isaiah. We are so fortunate to have known him back when!

I mentioned this a few days ago in reference to a twitter post from Tony Barnhart. Let's face it, the teams were strong armed into this whether they like it or not, the SEC is a juggernaut and fast moving freight train (pick your cliche) and they are setting the agenda, even as the Big 12 tried to make one last stand via a court battle with ESPN.

When all is said and done, I believe it will have a ramfications for the MAC. The question is whether the ramfications will be positive or negative?

Yep, there would have been easy no votes on this if the SEC did not threaten the hammer on the dissenters.

maybe this is the solution:

We need to move away from the idea that college sports must be varsity N.C.A.A. programs, full of recruited stars. About 460,000 collegians compete at the N.C.A.A. level. More than 11 million play club or intramural sports, nearly all of them for the joy and intrinsic benefits of athletics.

Texas A&M was just fine being the only Texas team in the SEC and there was still bad blood from the last round of realignment between them and UT...probably always will be. However their current AD Ross Bjork is an SEC guy who was the AD at Ole Miss before this. I'm sure someone sat them down and told them "for the good of the league" plus "we'll make a metric ton of money" which probably started to sound not so bad.

There was a piece on ESPN about the Big 12 and PAC 12 looking into some kind
of "Strategic Partnership".

The Big 12 Commissioner has mentioned a possible merger or "Scheduling Alliance" with another conference.

He said that the Big 12 expects a 50% reduction in T.V. money when Texas and Oklahoma leaves.

The PAC 12 Commissioner used the phrase "dominos falling"

There have also been rumors of a B10/Pac-12 merger or partnership in order to solidify their interest in the Rose Bowl. So what will probably come down is that the B10 will take two of the remaining eight B12 teams, the Pac-12 will take four, and two (probably WVU and one other) will wind up fending for themselves, likely to the AAC.

The number I’ve seen (via Steven Godfrey i think) is closer to a 75% reduction. Going from ~$35million/school/year to ~$9million/school/year.
The remaining 8 teams just aren’t worth that much, from a “Football Television Broadcast Rights” perspective

I just think we are still going to have this 12 team playoff format coming even with super-conferences. I think with texas and oklahoma now every year my guess is your going to get at least 4 SEC teams in the playoff. That means their are SEC teams that would of never of sniffed the current playoff format that may qualify off a 10-2 or 9-3 season.

Your reasoning here make perfect sense to me. It would almost seem that this kind of playoff structure would be an understood (behind closed doors) part of the agreement before UT and OK would sign on the dotted line. They are going into a more competitive conference which they can't dominate, at least in the near future, so increasing their chances of making the playoffs would cancel out the negative of not getting in the current playoff system by beating up on Big12-10 opponents.

Saw a story today that Kansas is courting the B10. They'd just be another patsy in football but would be a good addition for b-ball.

So OSU and UM go to the SEC. B1G is good with Michigan since they still have MSU but have to backfill to keep a presence in Ohio. Ohio and UC to the Big Ten (so sorry Fiami, but you lose. You get NOTHING). I'm calling my shot right now, and you can't prove me wrong until OSU leaves. Fight Me!
