Topic: Jimbo Fisher's 90 Million Dollar Contract

Nice work if you can get it. He still is behind Nick Saban who makes 9.3 million a year, while Jimbo only makes 9.2 million a year. Will there ever be a day that a MAC coach who signs a 9 million contract, or 10% of Jimbo's 90 million dollar contract? I can't fathom it myself, but who knows what life might be like in 2050? I am not sure I will be alive then, and if things trend they way they look now, I am not sure the MAC will be around in 2050. No way we can compete in this arms race.

In the article, you will notice that of the Top 6 coaches salaries, only Dabo Swinney is not an SEC coach. Coach Saban has won his fair share of national championships at Alabama. Coach Fisher hasn't come close at Texas A & M. Again, nice work if you can get it. I believe Coach Candle of Toledo is the only MAC coach that makes 1 million a year, so more than 10% but less than 15% of Jimbo's salary for the highest paid MAC coach.

For some perspective, in 1982 Bear Bryant was the highest paid college coach with $450,000 in salary and benefits. Adjusted for inflation that would be just shy of $1.3 million in 2021.

Just about all of Alabama's were televised either nationally or regionally. The SEC had a TV deal with Raycom Sports as well as ABC.

In the G5 there are programs trying to stay within a standard deviation of power conference HC salaries. UCF and Houston are paying their head guys 4 million. Then you have a tier of G5 programs paying a standard deviation above FCS. The lowest paid FBS coach according to Hot Seat is 600,000 and Akron is tied for last.

I guess I should have focused on the topic, but I scrolled through this list and was stunned that Doug Martin is still coaching at New Mexico State and the second lowest-paid coach in FBS. He's had one winning record in 15 years of his career! I know he won a bowl game once, but that is pretty low expectations from anyone.

When the MAC. has 9 of the bottom 16 lowest paid coaches, you have a good idea how financially strapped the conference is. It’s amazing it’s competitive with other conferences at all. With the fact that the students in the conference are paying for the majority of the athletic budgets, how is this sustainable?

I guess I would look at it differently. The lowest paid FBS coach is making 600k in compensation which is plenty to attract a high quality football coach from the lower ranks. The MAC paying less particularly when compared to the AAC makes it financially efficient in light of the money they spend to compete in the same level bowl games.

One of the reasons MAC salaries have gone up though is because it helps to justify a larger buyout provision. Start them off at 600k, they win the division, bump them up to 1 million but with a 1 million buyout now attached. Coach then leaves for a bigger program the next year and the MAC school doesn't have to pay a year of salary. Of course there is the risk that you end up over paying for a coach that cannot win you a MACC and you are stuck.

I believe Frank was the first 500k coach in the MAC ten years ago and today we have a coach making close to 2 million. With the way its going in another 5-6 years every MAC coach will be 1 million+.

I also saw that Woody Hayes's last salary in 1978 was $43,000 or about $180,000 today adjusted for inflation. Even if you compare it to the average household income of $15,000 at the time, that would put him at about $230,000 today (avg income now is $78,000). And he didn't even get any incentives for punching Clemson players.

What a hustler Jimbo Fisher is! There is no way that his level of success will meet the insane level of expectations that he is faced with right now. I suspect old Jimbo is just laughing his butt off all the way to the bank.
