So the squad is 0-2 headed into an ESPN nationally televised game , after getting beat by a poor FCS program , and the strength coaches decide it's a good idea to dawn cowboy hits to stand out and draw attention to themselves to add to the embarrassment ?

Why is this allowed ?

Why was this done ?

Someone , please let's try to minimize the embarrassment ..

I brought this up after the Syracuse game (these guys had them on during that game)...and was told they are these Strength and Conditioning Savants from (checks notes) Arkansas State. SMH.

It's beyond ridiculous, they look like amateurs. It's not a good look.

I’m about exhausted of the fact ONE of them is from A-State being brought up. It doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with a cowboy hat. He simply wore a backwards hat there. He’s also been at SMU, Baylor, Missouri State, ULL, and Rice but you’re so hung up on the fact I said he coached at A-State when I was there, so congrats on missing the point (ban me if you need to, but I’m sick of this being the talking point any time the stupid hat is brought up).

It’s a gimmick. I get that we’re 0-3. I get that we’re playing like dog crap. Could the sideline antics be dialed back a little? Sure. Check the energy though on sidelines. Those gimmicks keep that energy up at times. Want a sure fire way to finish this season with no wins? Take all that junk away. Tell the team that they can’t have these things that I’m sure were their idea because they suck. Sure fire way to kill morale and pack this season in.

I’ll add I meant energy on sidelines across the US. Revisit ULL when they came to Peden and smacked us. Check their sideline and all the BS going on over there.

So your saying we need more Cowboy 🤠 Hats? Cowboy 🤠 Hats = energy. Maybe we should use more cowbells too.

I don’t have a problem with the general idea (and I’m an old (school) guy) because I realize that’s what is done in this day and age. But, for crying out loud, could the coaches and team at least establish some minimum performance criteria for enabling it to be done? Getting beat by Duquesne the way we did should have definitely shelved it for the Louisiana game.

Haha definitely not pro Cowboy hat. While Ohio is in a sort of country part of Ohio none of these players are. Jonesboro wasn’t really in a country area (I’d say more so there than here, but he didn’t do that there). I’m just kinda irritated that the talking point lately is the choice of hat a strength coach chooses to wear. He’s not taking the thing off and riding the QB passing net around like a horse. Is it distracting if you’re looking for something to nitpick, sure. I’m more pro cutting out the BS celebrations when you’re down more than a TD and even more so when you’re winless.

If you do look back though at like that ULL game at Peden, they had these shoulder pads with spikes (kinda like the Road Warriors), chains, etc… They kept the energy up and it was filled with gimmicks even when they were down. I just don’t think at this point you can pull the plug on everything that these guys came up with and bought into without putting the death blow into morale. Is there a way to dial it back? Maybe… BUT, it can’t be a get rid of everything then. The days of a LB getting a sack and just lining up for the next play or a WR getting a TD and just heading back to the sideline are over. Arguably since the early 2000s it’s gotten worse across all levels.

Can you get a coach in that puts an end to all this? Maybe, but these are the same coaches these guys have had their entire career so how do you 180 on your current stance that you’ve had for years? All this sideline stuff happens everywhere. Only difference is you only typically see it when you’re winning 👀.

My comments were more based on the general theatrics rather than just the cowboy hats in particular.

I think these fellas are selfishly trying to draw attention to themselves like the jacked guru from northwestern with all of his energy !! .. when you're getting your ass kicked by 14 points , I don't think they should be as worried about filming a throning , and more worried about getting back in the ballgame, and not making their employers look like fools on national TV

+1. Walton's TD dance when they were down 28-13 looked entirely stupid. I realize they want to put some fun into the game and maybe it provides some kind of incentive to the players, but when they've scored five offensive TDs in 12 quarters, maybe they should get back to concentrating on getting the ball in the end zone instead of the celebration afterwards.

To me, you celebrate like that when you win. Or when you make plays to get your team the lead, or at minimum, tied. Otherwise, when you're getting thumped, you look foolish and like you don't care about winning as much as the theatrics. While that's probably not true, it comes across that way. To gain a measure of respect, if I'm Albin, I'm telling them that crap ends unless they're winning or in the lead.

I was at a D3 game today at Wilmington College in Ohio. Wilmington was down 49-0 to Ohio Northern. Wilmington made a big play and scored a TD. Afterwards, there was a huge celebration on the sideline with all sorts of posing, etc. It just seems out of place. You're getting your ass handed to you on a silver platter yet you're strutting around drawing attention to yourself. I don't get it.

Got to agree with Jeff and the majority of posters on this subject. We're 0 and 3 and about to go 0 and 4, and we have a couple of guys dressed in hats that you might see on Jethro's buddies on the Beverly Hillbillies. On top of that, we put a guy on a throne and put a crown on his head on the sidelines after a big play. Embarrassing, selfish, far from what team is and a horrible example for kids in youth sports today.

I'm coaching 5th grade volleyball this fall and we had a girl get her serve over for the first time all year - practice and games. When she came off the floor she got a high five fist bump. The smile on her face when she made the serve told the whole story and that smile, the feeling that came with it, and that fist bump was all she needed.

Put the hats in the closet or better yet, return them to Goodwill because that's where they look like they came from and send the throne and crown to the prop shop in Kantner Hall. It would be better used the next time they do a production of the King and I.

I agree with Alan, except that he misjudges the quality of goods available at Goodwill. This kind of behavior is the essence of "me" over "team." While it's popular with some college teams these days, I watched several games yesterday between good P5 teams that had none of these type of antics. I think it has to do with the culture put in place by the coach. Frank let a little of this type of thing creep in, but Albin has put it on steroids, and I don't like it one bit. I can't image that it's impressive to potential recruits either.

I think a winning program is appealing to recruits .. so what we have isn't real appealing !! .. the clowns in the cowboy hats may be better suited recruiting kids for Barnum and Bailey or maybe Ringling brothers ?!?! .. maybe we should talk to Bedrock and see if we could get them a tent for the next home game ?
