If anyone still cares, Julie is currently on the coaches show talking game day experience. If you listen to the replay it’s at 35 minutes in.
Never mind. Talked in circles for a few minutes but didn’t really say anything. Stephens is apparently on next week though.

I disagree. Good on her for coming on the show to discuss it. I heard accountability for the game day experience being rough and a disappointment at our 0-4 start. Not a lot of specifics on how/wha but I have asked for accountability or at least an acknowledgment that this start - record and play on the field - is not Ohio football and I heard that. Again, good on her for wanting to address it and nice job by Russ to ask the obvious yet tough questions, especially as an employee.

I agree completely. Not sure she wants our input, though. No doubt she's dealing with some pretty ugly financial stuff behind the scenes. I've noticed she is far more visible with regard to women's sports, perhaps by design as they've been pushed into the background for so long.

It would make sense to give fans some appreciation of the challenges she and the department are facing and set reasonable expectations for the gameday experience.

I do know they were proactively planning a three-year fundraising campaign to celebrate Frank's eventual retirement. That, of course, got blown out of the water this summer.
There is no financial challenges right now. Covid has been a miracle pill for the University financial picture.
Sure there are financial struggles right now. A global pandemic is not a magic blue pill to any organization who counts on sporting events and ticket sales to bring in money.

FWIW NIU had serious gameday issues in our first home game against Wyoming. We not only did not have enough people at concession stands leading to really long lines, we ran out of just about everything. They've had issues with staffing which is pandemic-related so sort of understandable. Running out of water and stuff like that, not so much. Sounds like other MAC teams had similar issues though.

It was better a couple weeks better for our Maine game - but then, we've had small crowds so it should be a simple matter, really.

The concession stands that we have were built when the stadium held 12,000 and there were no more than 4 to 6 things on the menu - popcorn, hotdogs, coffee, and maybe pop and every transaction was cash and those working could do the math in their head. Now we have lots of options, credit cards, and some of the food is prepared off site and has to be brought in. Our current setup is simply inadequate and will need a complete redesign. I went down and looked at both sides - student and home side and it's an absolute disaster because of the "kitchen" we have to work in.

As an aside, I ran the big concession stand at Blossom years ago when we routinely has 20,000 fans with the munchies.

I miss seeing the conference flags of each team flying on permanent poles at the top of the stadium; yes the band carries them during pre-game but in years gone by they flew throughout the games.

I thought the field looked okay but perhaps too much little black rubber causing a dulling effect of the color?

My older brother, who first stepped on campus in the fall of 1959 thought the experience favorable. Beautiful sunshine, good view from seats twenty rows up and on the 5 yardline, competitive game with some decent action. He had eaten and drank a few in Tailgreat so needed nothing but the water he bought before lines formed. The restrooms were uncrowded. His only negative observation was no available drinking fountain to refill his bottle. The post game band show was thrilling for him and the concession stand worker came out and gave away hotdogs to the 110 fans.

He didn't once look at the scoreboard video; just football and band and his comment was that Peden, with max 6 home games was a nice venue of low overhead for the university and the experience should have been good for any young man attending that might want to suit-up for the Bobcats.

C'mon, SBH. Blossom allowed fans to bring their own coolers with adult beverages back then, therefore allowing you to avoid buying that overpriced 3.2% crap from Alan.

I thought yesterday was a marked improvement in gameday ops. Concessions were long but that is life now. Jackie O's back with a reasonable line and another beer/h2o tub there too. Again long lines but still a great improvement. I will criticize a lot when needed but there were improvements and they are listening/trying.

In 1959 there was no 110. Your brother would have been watching the marching band directed by Charles Minelli. Your brother's observatons were spot on. There were also vendors coming through the stands -- on both sides -- selling hotdogs, pop, cracker jacks and the like. No need to wait in line!

I was going to see the band on the field playing the fight song when the team came out! Overall much better environment but the students still left!

Considering the game was definitely still in the balance, I wonder if it had more to do with other Homecoming festivities (formal or informal)?

Right you are including kegs. Saw more than one of those on the grass after the big shows like Pink Floyd. For you Blossom fans, here's a pretty slick data base - not all of the shows but a good sampling:

3:30 start. The parade was over before 11. And students left at halftime of the Duquesne game - just not as many.

Awesome search tool. During my three high school years, I saw (all through $16 season passes):

1977: Boz Scaggs; Southside Johnny; America; Dan Fogelberg; Doobie Brothers; James Taylor; Seals & Crofts*; Jackson Browne; Leo Sayer*; Linda Ronstadt

1978: Boz Scaggs; Seals & Crofts*; Doobie Brothers; Barry Manilow**; Linda Ronstadt; Jackson Browne; Chuck Mangione; Pat and Debby Boone***

1979: Marshall Tucker; Stephen Stills; America; JT; Donna Summer*; Chicago; Gordon Lightfoot; Southside; Doobie Brothers.

* -- Only went to impress a date

** -- Said date was (inaccurately) considered a "sure thing"

*** -- Date considered a "sure thing" upon hearing "You Light Up My Life" (also inaccurate)

IV -- Where is Earth Wind & Fire? I saw them at least twice.

V -- I now live less than a mile from Blossom's front gate. Haven't been to a rock/pop show in several years.

Part of my "compensation package" was a free ticket to every show in the summer of 1973 for a guest. My girlfriend (now wife of almost 44 years) often went with me to work. I had to report at 2 so she'd sit out on the lawn and read a book or do some sewing. She got to hear some pretty impressive sound checks. Somehow we made it through the summer without her becoming a "seamstress for the band."

We had food from the concession stand for the first time this season on Saturday. We missed the Duquesne debacle/game and didn't eat there for the Syracuse game. It's a simple menu but I will say the hot dog's are pretty good. My son and I also split a hot pretzel, and it was good. It's hard stuff to get wrong but at least it's not wrong. Overpriced a bit, sure, but you get that in any stadium venue, I think.

Some on here would argue with it being hard to screw up a hot pretzel.

You mean like on this thread from 2013? Amazing how many threads we have here that contain complaints about hot pretzels.

There are some pretty impressive POS systems out there now that streamline things a lot (regardless of payment type) but would take some upfront $ investment.
