Hear me out...I know the recent news is not good, but he's gotta be an upgrade, right? I think he could really bring a spark to the region. Attendance would be through the roof! Imagine going uptown and seeing Mr. Gruden scouting Kent State at Donkey, or enjoying a hearty beverage at Pigskin. The possibilities are endless! Just some food for thought on this magnificent Monday evening...

Pass. The last thing the university needs is more negative publicity.

Well, only slightly better on the moral compass, Urban Meyer will be available soon. He'll probably ended up at Youngstown State, though.

Oh rabbi, this is the idea of a true schmuck! This would be the most calamitous move in the history of western civilization since the Trojans allowed the horse through the gates of their city! A true spiritual leader would cleanse this idea from his head like Schmutz from one's face after a delicious new York bagel. Shame on you!

I appreciate the sarcasm, but can we just not do this?

I actually really enjoyed the sarcasm this time around. 😂

Randy Moss just cried on national TV over the Gruden emails. Perhaps we bring him in to help us with the West Virginia recruiting pipeline.

"More negative publicity." Not saying we don't have challenges, but what negative publicity are you referring to? My opinion is we tend to fly under the radar on many of the issues that are discussed on this board. I'd pass on Gruden too.

OK, then. What about Jim Gruden, father of Jon and Jay and former professional and collegiate football coach?

He's only 84. I couldn't find a collegiate coaching record but as RBs coach at Tampa in 1982 & 83 the team was 7-18. They did make the playoffs in '82 with a 5-4 record in a strike-shortened season (was that "The Replacements" season?). He'd probably want to bring in at least one son as an assistant or analyst (remember, the root word of analyst is anal).

At 1-5 so far this year, I'm wondering if we will do better?

He's a UD grad and familiar with the area.

It'll never happen, but he'd be a huge upgrade.

The only benefit Gruden would bring to Athens is the Chucky doll costumes that would consume Halloween.

I mean, we can't do better. But we also can't get Gruden.

We'll do worse. He was just the coach of the Raiders. There are roughly 23,000 jobs in football that rank between Head Coach of the Raiders and head coach Ohio University.

I am not sure about that. It depends on a lot of things. I am sure he is financially set for life and he might not want to coach if it isn't in the NFL. He isn't going to be able to get back into broadcasting. He is very damaged goods. Most college presidents would veto his hiring. Bobby Petrino ended up at WKU. Rick Pitino is at Iona. Gruden isn't guaranteed that any FBS program will take him if he desires that much to coach again. Someone might but I know enough about my alma mater to think that someone is very unlikely to be Ohio.

I'm not actually advocating that we hire John Gruden. I'm just noting that the person we end up hiring will not be as good a football coach as John Gruden. We will not do better than him as far as football coaching skills go. We can hire a better person than him pretty easily.

We’re five posts away from someone suggesting O. J. Simpson coach our running backs.

Hey, he was found innocent of murder, and is now released from prison for the armed robbery and kidnapping charges.

No denying his football acumen. But his baggage, no/low filter and the fact that he would have one foot out the door the entire time aren't worth the risk, IMHO.

I don't see Gruden being allowed anywhere near the game of football again, let alone in Athens. I hope that he has invested his money wisely, because his exposed ugliness behind the scenes is unforgivable.

He was found "not guilty," that is, there wasn't enough evidence to convict. "Innocent" is a whole different matter, and in civil court a jury found him "responsible" for the deaths and awarded Goldman's father $33.5 million in damages. Then, of course, OJ dashed off to Florida where personal assets can't be touched to cover liabilities in other states.

I stand corrected . . . but I was just trying to make sick joke . . . and I guess I was successful.
