This is a winnable game, but we are going to have to show up and play with pride and the staff will have to be up for the challenge. CMU has won a couple of games so far (FIU and Robert Morris University) while losing to Missouri, LSU and Fiami. They are beatable and this is the type of game we should be winning. Go Bobcats!
If OUr defense shows up.
If we pick the right QB.
If we remove stupid penalties.
If the kicking game continues to improve.
And if we can overcome the CMU curse -- 5-26-1 all time, 1-9 in the Solich era, including two MACCG losses, last win was 2011 43-28 at Mt. Unpleasant, last win at Peden was 2000, 52-3.
Nathan has to throw downfield better to get the WRs involved. Against Akron he had just one completion of more than seven yds, the 34-yarder to Walton. Beyond that, the biggest gainer to a WR was the pass interference call on the throw to Cox. Three of his seven completions were to a RB (Allison) and two of those were for negative yardage. We haven't seen a lot of downfield passing from Armani, but if they can work on that with him he could be very dangerous.
The running game started gelling when Ohio ran inside to the left and outside to the right. Jackson and Ramer (I think) along with Titsworth were opening big holes on the left side. A couple of times Tuggle got into the hole, then bounced right for big gainers. The right side of the line was good at sealing off the outside and that helped the speed option to work.
The defense came up huge in the second half. Houston had a big game and made a diving tackle over another Ohio player that prevented a big gainer for Akron. It was good seeing Evans and Daxon getting after their QBs. I realize it was Akron but the change from the first 36 minutes to the last 24 was very apparent. They'll need to play a qualtiy 60 minutes this week.
I agree with those who think that this game will be a pivotal point of the season. CMU had a close loss at Mizzou, so they could easily be above water. Their loss at MofO last week could be a blueprint for our gameplan this week.
