Two words: Ditch ‘em!

Explanation: they’re a stupid ass gimmick.

I agree with Alan, except that he misjudges the quality of goods available at Goodwill. This kind of behavior is the essence of "me" over "team." While it's popular with some college teams these days, I watched several games yesterday between good P5 teams that had none of these type of antics. I think it has to do with the culture put in place by the coach. Frank let a little of this type of thing creep in, but Albin has put it on steroids, and I don't like it one bit. I can't image that it's impressive to potential recruits either.
I think a winning program is appealing to recruits .. so what we have isn't real appealing !! .. the clowns in the cowboy hats may be better suited recruiting kids for Barnum and Bailey or maybe Ringling brothers ?!?! .. maybe we should talk to Bedrock and see if we could get them a tent for the next home game ?

If we were 3-0 now or even 2-1 would we be having this conversation?

Just wondering.

We 100% would not be. The year it took us beating 0-11 Akron just to get bowl eligibility was the first year Coach Dixon brought out the TD helmet, we had the golden PlayStation controller, and those are just the two I remember. I get 0-3 isn’t ideal, but two guys wearing Cowboy hats aren’t the reason we’re not winning.

** the turnover belt became a thing that year too. Forgot about that thing since we didn’t get many turnovers.

Good point. Probably not. The TD helmet and the turnover belt in past years never seemed to be a distraction to me. Is it fair to say that this team needs to earn the right to swagger? I mean take the lead for once…win one. Until then hand the ball to the ref and hustle back to the bench…

Agree on all points. Schticks and gimmicks perpetuated by coaches etc. are celebrated when a team is winning. When losing anything deemed a distraction is lumped onto the list of reasons why a team is failing. It's all a fad and will likely be replaced by something else in a few more years.

The team is 0-3.

I mean surely the cowboy hats and LeBron's throne stay in a closet at Peden Stadum this weekend correct?

Probably not, but when you're losing and playing as badly as this team has played, all the little stuff gets magnified. Sort of like in "Moneyball" when the players were dancing around in the clubhouse after their umpteenth straight loss. This thread is the equivalent of Billy Beane smashing some boom boxes. It might be less of an issue if we were winless after three close losses (although the Duquesne loss would still be a bit too much to take). It's the same as some of the criticism of Albin's press conferences. You can afford to look silly on the sidelines when you're playing well or even so-so. But when you're in the bottom 30 in the country in almost every major statistical category, looking silly on the sidelines makes people think you're not serious about your job.

Even the stupid septer and the throne after a touchdown. This team was getting demolished and we have guys wearing a crown and holding a septer on a throne? Come on...get a grip. No wonder this program is dying a slow death. I was always ok with the military helmet because they were respecting the military. Turnover chains, thrones, etc those are gimmicks meant for cheap programs like The U. Not supposed to be OUr guys.

seriously I'll eat crow for days if somebody can find me one, with evidence.

Agreed with 1998 as I'm sure many others do. There's a reason I like Nick Chubb - it's the way he comports himself. There have been a few times where I swore I saw Jim Brown running the ball the last couple of games.

Akron has a stupid turnover pencil or at least did haha.

I'd also wager we aren't necessarily respecting the military. Wouldn't say we're being disrespectful, but we're probably taking some of THEIR things and just doing them to be cool.

LOL and I'm sure many others don't. Look, if we were 3-0 nobody is saying a word about the sideline. I agree 100% that they shouldn't be celebrating like that with the current situation, its bush league and makes us look unintelligent and lacking self-awareness. If we're 3-0 then it just looks like they are having fun. Come on now its not that hard to see the difference. It's 2021, the times where players score and hand the ball to the ref ended....in like 1960 (excuse me, my millennialism is showing).

OK you like Nick Chubb. I like JuJu Smith-Schuster and I REALLY like Randy Moss.

You hit the nail on the head with your reference to "Fake Miami" (aka UMiami of Florida). These kinds of antics always remind me of those guys and the fact that their un-sportsman-like play back in the 1980s was the impetus of the taunting penalties now in the rule book. Anything associated with that sorry-ass program is something I'd not like our beloved Bobcats to emulate.

Because this dilemma is more intriguing to me than the play on the field this afternoon, can anyone confirm or deny this?

These gimmicks reward good play, so unfortunately it'll be another week (at least) before we have an answer.

Today's game would be the perfect excuse for dumping ALL the celebratory crap. They need to play for the team, not for themselves. I mentioned this elsewhere, but if you saw Armani on the sidelines after his TD you'd swear he was the victim of a sack, strip, scoop and score instead of scoring Ohio's only TD of the game. No celebrations at all. Say what you might about his play, he's really a team player, something we don't seem to have a lot of right now.

Jason Arkley tweeted that he didn't see a sign of the hats today.
