UMass lost to Maine this afternoon, 35-10. At home. Maine was 4-5 going into the game. It's UMass's second straight home loss vs a Colonial Athletic Association team. They lost to Rhode Island 35-22 last week. Their only win this season was against UConn, another one-win team (a six-pt win over Yale six weeks after losing to Holy Cross). Whenever the subject of MAC expansion comes up, UMass's name always seems to come up. No more, please.

I'd take them with WKU if they'd come in for all sports. Their basketball team, though not what it used to be, might make our conference a regular two-bid league.

I have to say that even though Maine has one less win than Duquesne that they would be favored to beat Duquesne. Maine's schedule is tougher.

We lost to Duquesne. At least the CAA is a very good FBS conference.

The Northeast conference doesn't have a single team in the FCS top 25. The CAA has three.

There is a difference in losing the final play of the game and losing by 25.

Just for those keeping score... the two who fell through, today...

MTSU won 50-10 and WKU won 42-21.

Maybe when MTSU stops being so broke, they can move to the MAC in a few years.

MTSU probably burned that bridge. I think the general feeling is that they made their manure bed and can lie in it. But from the comments of WKU's AD (found by Club Hyatt) it seems that WKU isn't necessarily tied to MTSU and would consider moving to the MAC on its own, if another suitable team could be found. https://morningconsult.com/2020/09/28/gen-z-poll-sports-f...

So why not do so now? Yeah, I get it, scheduling...but if they're a fit now, and they want to come now, why wait?

The MAC doesn't want uneven divisions and the available options to bring with them are quite slim.

Add UMass, UConn, Temple and Army as a package for football only moving BG and Miami to West division. 16 teams Mac gets fees from those four schools for football only deal. ESPN gives Mac a boost with those east coast markets to match the AAC. Temple then puts basketball back in A10. Only do this if MAc can make money and get a spot in playoff. 16 team conference champion should get a spot in 12 team playoff.

Except that both Temple and Army like where they are -- both are getting more TV money than they ever could by joining (rejoining, in Temple's case) the MAC. Temple also probably burned more bridges than will be built with the infrastructure legislation when they left the MAC behind for the AAC. As for UConn and UMass, there's no value added for the MAC with either team for many years to come.

Seriously. Army is a pipedream and people who think the MAC is capable of creating incentives to get Army to join are completely naive.

Right now Army has a TV deal that runs through 2028 that guarantees two national TV games on CBS. The value of those two games alone exceeds the TV deal payout MAC teams receive to play on Tuesdays at 9:30pm.

They also have 100% of games televised on CBS Sports. The MAC's offer reduces their tv revenue and requires that they play midweek games; unlike teams in the MAC, Army actually has a GameDay experience that generates real revenue for them, and is one of the best game day environments in college football. You think Army is going to throw away a hundred year tradition of Saturday morning parades, the corp marching to the stadium, fall Saturdays in the Hudson Valley to make less money on TV in the MAC?

It's not even remotely realistic.

The 12 team playoff might force Army to join a conference because they will be at a disadvantage recruiting without being part of the Top 6 conference champion set up. The Top 4 conference champs regardless of regular season CFP ranking get buys to the playoff.

That said do you think Army would join the MAC over the AAC? The AAC was trying to get Air Force to join up too and they nearly did this fall. All 3 academies could eventually be in the AAC.

My sense is that Army feels like they're always at a disadvantage recruiting, and that playoff eligibility is so far down the list of priorities for the average Army football recruit, that I don't know how much it moves the needle.

But if they go to a conference, it'll likely be AAC alongside Navy. At least the AAC has a TV deal comparable to their existing deal from a money standpoint.

Why in the world do you people think Army wants in a conference? Army has been an Independent for over 100 years, and only affiliated with CUSA for 7 years and left because it simply does not work for them.

My plan to add UMass, UConn, Temple and Army football only would only happen if MAC got equal deal with AAC and automatic bid with a 12 team playoff. That would get those independents access to the football playoff. MAC would get better TV and money and bowls with this. Also eliminates the fcs non conference games. Go to a 10 game conference schedule. The MAC division champions would have 10-2 overall record and likely ranked in top 25. most years. that would make the conference champ with the automatic bid into playoff legit.

At least we could beat them whenever we next field a team capable of beating an FCS team, of which UMASS is basically the equivalent.
