MAC could add Wku, Mtsu, Indiana State and Southern Illinois all sports. It's makes geographic sense and upgrades basketball. Gives NIU and Ball State in State rivals.

For other reasons as well. I had heard that both CUSA and Sun Belt had offered Liberty membership when it made the move and that Liberty had turned them down. But an article I found says that Liberty offered to pay CUSA $24 million to get league membership and the CUSA presidents turned them down flat. Didn't want a conservative, private evangelical school with a sometimes controversial chancellor (who is now gone) in their midst. Still, they apparently were willing to accept the school's cash for games. ODU reportedly was paid $1.3 million for a game at Liberty (a two-hour drive) and T'erd and SMiss reportedly got $500.000 each for a home-and-home series. Now that the remnants of CUSA are in desperation mode, maybe they'll overlook some of Liberty's baggage. https://www.pilotonline.com/sports/columns/article_4aef1f...

I like the MAC in basketball, but in football it's a dull, has-been conference. The MAC is irrelevant for schools looking for a home. Having said that, Id be happy for WKU and Middle to come on board.

I would hope that gets the MAC closer to a 2 bid league for the NCAA tournament, but we shall see.

They need to go ahead and get it done if it's going to happen. Maybe that would prompt EKU and JMU to make the jump to FBS D-1 in football and join as well. Not as easy as it sounds though... they would need to come up with around 15 more schollie for football (?) and add a women's sport with about 15 schollies (?) to stay compliant. If that is still how it works.

JMU is going to the Sun Belt. It's a done deal.

UMass president has stated that UMass is looking for a football only conference and is sticking with the A-10 in all other sports. Guess we can cross them off the list.

He could always look to the region a few hundred miles to their east. Probably be about as successful. I don’t see that happening…at least if he wants to stay FBS.

According some wags on the MACbbs site, UMASS only issued that statement to save face after the MAC told them to take a hike. Apparently, the MAC decided they didn't want them -- even with all sports.

So when do we coin the term "mid-Mega"?

James Madison has received unanimous approval from the state to join the Sun Belt. Formal announcement about joining the league coming soon.

JMU is hosting a second round game of the FCS/1AA playoff today.

They should cherish this moment. It may be the last time they ever vie for a national championship in football.

And even with that, the fact that JMU would much rather be in the FBS tells you all you need to know about being in the FCS.
