The Camellia Bowl was 15-16 and the Dollar General Bowl was 16-17. Aside from the completely unacceptable loss after being up quite a bit at halftime, I thought the Camellia Bowl was considerably more fun than the DG. Montgomery was a somewhat decent town and had some pretty good food. All Mobile had was a Waffle House a quarter mile up the road. Nothing will top the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl down in St. Pete. That trip was unreal. I always get a kick picturing Ron Collins saying to me and a few other guys on the bus as we were pulling into the hotel, “Ya lose 5 games and you get to spend Christmas at the beach. Can’t really argue with that.” I’d be curious to see what the payout was for that game. We got something like $146 for per diem and that was all blown at the cigar bar a few blocks from our hotel. I heard wonderful things about the Bahamas Bowl most notably being that it’s a lawless environment where fans were walking on the sidelines drinking beer. Heartbroken I missed out on that one.
