This is for oldkatz. You won't hear me say this often, but Go Army! The USMA 24-22 victory over Missouri was a real classic. I was actually rooting for Army the whole way, but what a gutsy performance. All those 4th down conversions and then that march down the field with less that 2:00 minutes to go for the winning FG. Made me proud to see a service academy play so well with so much discipline and guts. Best football game I've seen in awhile. Take a bow, rice paddy grunt. Your guys did well!
As I recall, when Army started its final possession, the clock showed 1:11. Not a chance, thought I. The announcer speculated that Army might go with its 3rd or 4th string QB. Yeah, I thought, that doesn't mean much when talking Army. Then in came that 3rd/4th stringer. Young man played with poise and completed clutch passes.
With 3 seconds to go, when Army sent in its FG kicker, he had missed earlier in the game. Announcer related that his career long best was under 40. This kick would be 41. He nails it.
As an Army vet, I confess to feeling a sizable measure of pride in those young student athletes.
