It’s announcer Gus Johnson’s shtick.
When I tune in a game and Johnson is the announcer, I tend to rely heavily on the mute button. Another one who gets that treatment from me is Herbstreit. They both annoy me for different reasons.
Gus with his staccato and meladramatic delivery gets on my nerves. I think he thinks that the dramatic pauses between words adds extra excitment to his voice and the overall prsentation. To me it just sounds like false puffery.
Kirk with his know-it-all attitude and breakdown of every play, including taking names and mumbers is a little over the top for me. It has something to do with style. There some announcers, usually ex-coaches, who do the same kind of analysis but in a lower-key way and more judiciously that I like.
