This is just a bad bad idea! Especially in the day of the transfer portal.

Aside from the money and all, the injury factor is a no for me. But who knows!

The "put it in your stadium and charge $10" line is kind of funny.

What are some of the unintended consequences that you would predict?

You specifically mention the transfer portal; would it show the grass is greener elsewhere or are there other reasons having this type of practice would cause a player to go elsewhere?

In my high school hoop days we would have pre season scrimmages against teams not on our regular season schedule. Sounds similar.

And if I recall, we have had "secret" practices/scrimmages with other basketball teams through the years.

Most levels of most sports, including football on pro and high school levels, compete against other teams in scrimmages, exhibitions or preseason games.

As someone mentioned above basketball has been playing scrimmages and not to mention "exibition" games for years vs Rio Grande, Capital, Marietta and others. High school teams play two football scrimmages before having an opening game. NFL teams practice vs one another in August before the regular season begins in September.

It would likely be a controlled scrimmage, so the risk of injury is probably no greater than intrasquad scrimmages. And I doubt we'd scrimmage with any team that's on our schedule that year. This coming season it could be CMU, EMU or Toledo in the MAC, or somebody like WVU, Pitt or Cincy. And the coaching staff would have to be complete idiots to use any trick plays, even in a closed scrimmage, so it's doubtful any opponent could pick up anything useful.

Well, seems the MAC has come to their senses and realized this was a half-crocked idea. As the MAC has withdrawn their request!

And come on, basketball is not football.

The masses at Bobcatattack are waiting to hear why this was such a bad idea.

The masses have their own opinion. The fact the MAC sponsored this request (no other conferences signed on) and withdrew it in a week speaks to the fact that this was not a good idea.

And being the fiscal person you are when it comes to football spending. How many thousands do you think it would add to move 185 people for a practice?

We did this, too, in high school. On the other hand, travel was not an issue as the schools we scrimmaged against were just across town.

And it's not an issue in basketball as you can take everything you need in two vans if you want to. Football? Not so much.

If a team is moving 185 people for a practice, therein lies the problem.

You are obviously out of touch with what a football program consist of. You only going to take half a team for a "practice"? What are the others going to do? You not going to take trainers? Not going to take all the coaches and their staff of GA's and assistants? Players going to carry their own equipment? Hold it on the trip in their lap? You not taking the DFO and his staff who, is in charge of the logistics? You going to feed the team, or stop and McDonald's? You not going to film the practice? If so, you just using one camera? two? three? Then of course we have to process and upload that film, so we can watch and learn. All this takes bodies!
