It's a free market except for the players. It's getting closer for them.
It’s always been a free market for athletes. If an athlete doesn’t like the offer from a college, or the NCAA in general, they are free to play their sport elsewhere. Not sure what stops them, or why so many are upset about what the NCAA offers athletes. Nobody is forced to join a college or participate in sports under the NCAA system. Don’t like it? Turn pro and be happy.
There's no definition of a free market which includes a multi-billion dollar "not for profit" that owns a monopoly on an entire segment of an industry and places restrictions on eligibility and earnings.
What other industry has anything remotely similar? If you're gonna use the word "free market" at least adhere to its generally accepted meaning; just because somebody is "free" to not play in college doesn't eliminate the the impact the NCAA has on the market for athletes in general. A free market requires unrestricted competition; the NCAA is placing all manner of restrictions on competition.
Cool if you like things the way they are, but it's complete nonsense to describe it as a free market. It's fundamentally not.
