This seems worthy of a new post. Jason just broke a CFL record and has totally dominated tonight.

Yeah. He torched them for 436 yds through the air, beating the old record by a Canadian QB in a single game. The record had stood since 1981. He was about 25 yds shy of the overall CFL record. He was 39 of 45 with 5 TDs. He's throwing at an 86% clip in the first two games.

Does excelling at this level give any indication that he might have an NFL future? How often are CFL standouts picked up by NFL teams? I know there are some on here who follow pro ball much closer than I do who could answer these questions.

There are a few CFL quarterbacks who transitioned to the NFL successfully. Most famously, Warren Moon, Doug Flutie, and Jeff Garcia. Joe Theisman also played in the CFL before the NFL, but my understanding is that wasn't a result of a lack of NFL opportunities.

But generally, it's pretty rare and becoming more so. Scouting is just becoming so widespread and thorough, the folks slip through the cracks less and less. There are always bound to be late bloomers, but for the most part if a player has anything at all that suggests and NFL future, they'll get a look.

Just a phenomenal start to the season for Nathan. I thought I would include a couple of links that summarzie his situtation. One is the paltry salary he is earning this year, less than most Canadian high school teachers and coaches who were probably watching the game. The second link concerns his potential. Many CFL analysts feel has the potential to be one of the greatest Canadian quarterbacks in CFL history. Bobcat Love's Sense of Shame posted some of the great US quarterbacks who played in the CFL and made their way into the NFL. However, Nathan is in rarified air at the moment. It is a beautiful thing to watch.
