I know it's only 1 game, but kudos to Brian Smith the Bobcat passing game coordinator and running backs coach. He comes from a background at Hawaii and Washington State where they ran West Coast offenses and run and shoot. It looked like we had more of a real passing attack instead of just based off the run. We will see how it plays out against Penn State and Iowa State, but it should be good against MAC opponents.

The players have talked about him.

Watching the video he was on the field and interacting with the players.

I think he and OUr new D coordinator are excellent.

Was unable to watch, was Brian calling plays? Albin was calling plays last year, correct? Surprised he gave it up.

I thought our passing game looks a whole lot better, I don’t care who’s responsible for that but I love the slants across the middle and I think a bubble screen or whatever you cal that on one of the tds.

Just one general observation: I sit right behind the team in the Phillips Section. I thought all of the coaches looked more engaged than last year. Even TA seemed to have an intensity and control of the situation that was lacking last year. He really looked "in charge" rather than like a deer caught in the headlights, which was his look much of last year. There was an entirely different "feel" on the Ohio side compared to last year. I know that this is subjective and intangible, but to me it seemed a real gestalt change. I wonder if Frank gave him some leadership skill tutoring in the off season.

Watching the TD, I was thinking that last year and maybe others we would've tried a fade to the corner instead the bubble screen/inside slant. The TD was on a much higher percentage play.

It was also good to see no goofy TD celebrations on the sidelines or even in the end zone. Looks like coaches and players want to take care of business instead of stoking egos.

Imagine how much different it is when the coach can actually pick who is on their staff vs. taking what you were given with no chance to make changes. Just saying!

No doubt that was a factor.

Yes, I noticed the lack of that "goofiness" after our turnovers. I was very relieved to not see it. There a lot of teams that do those things, but I think it takes away from the "teamness" and, as you say, just strokes egos. This was put one more thing that gave me a good feel about the game and program. The special teams performance gave me flashbacks to not so good times, but I think we can probably remedy those things.

While true, it's also true that when Ohio ran a couple options, that seemed to disrupt their defense and open some passing lanes.

If you’ve got a solid running game, basing your passing attack off the run is even better. Just have to be able to run first. Being able to run the ball and empty the box is the key to successful season.
