ESPN looks at NDSU, which has dominated D1AA/FCS over the past decade, and JMU, the only team that has challenged NDSU. JMU is moving up this year to join the Sun Belt, even though it likely will drop to a .500 team for a few years. NDSU is apparently staying pat for now, but has a real conundrum with fan apathy. Its overwhelming success has caused fans to be blase about the program, with average attendance dropping from 18,000 in 2018 to 15,000 last year. So if NDSU stays in 1AA and continues its success, it might lose even more attendance.
The article mentions the two most likely places for NDSU to land if it moves up. Neither is very attractive. Although, as the article mentions, it would likely be an immediate bowl qualifier in the MAC, the nearest team is NIU, 600 miles away. And although fans might identify more with the MWC, the nearest team there is 800 miles away.
