No, they only gave scholarship's based on academic merit -- at least technically, as I alluded to above. They had some needs-based assistance as well, but they didn't call it a scholarship. And, I think there were also discounts for Lutheran PKs and some other categories. I believe the whole OAC, as then constituted, operated on the same basis. It looks like that D3 when formed followed the model that was already in place by conferences like the old OAC.

My recollection, from advice given to me when applying for college, was that standards were flexible, and the more skills you had, the more likely you were to get admitted, and to get an "academic" scholarship. Straight A's and 1500 on the SAT, and editor of the school paper? Good. B+ Average, 1300 SAT, but play the tuba and defensive end, also good. This wasn't in regards to any specific school, but college in general. Many from my school went to college, but no one ever went to a "football power", at least, not to play football.

Interesting story about how all the teams in the Northeast have lost the luster they had 30 or 40 years ago. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/34301978... . They're trying to regain some of that but it looks just so overwhelming I had to pause and take a breath in the middle of it.

Paterno apparently had an idea to save football in the Northeast by putting together a conference with Penn St, Pitt, WVU, Syracuse, Rutgers and others back when they were all indies. But there wasn't agreement and schools started joining "P" conferences soon afterwards.

ESPN looks at NDSU, which has dominated D1AA/FCS over the past decade, and JMU, the only team that has challenged NDSU. JMU is moving up this year to join the Sun Belt, even though it likely will drop to a .500 team for a few years. NDSU is apparently staying pat for now, but has a real conundrum with fan apathy. Its overwhelming success has caused fans to be blase about the program, with average attendance dropping from 18,000 in 2018 to 15,000 last year. So if NDSU stays in 1AA and continues its success, it might lose even more attendance.

The article mentions the two most likely places for NDSU to land if it moves up. Neither is very attractive. Although, as the article mentions, it would likely be an immediate bowl qualifier in the MAC, the nearest team is NIU, 600 miles away. The nearest anything to Fargo is quite a long way away, especially DI football teams and conferences that would be in their realm.

The question I keep hearing is when do the Dakotas along with St Thomas drag someone up to FBS. Those 4 and St Thomas would be a solid backbone to a league if they could recruit someone out of the MVC to join them. Otherwise, Augustana State is the school always rumored to come up but they have not due to the Summit not wanting to add em.

I think that's it. The only way NDSU makes the jump to FBS is by creating a new conference, say North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Montana, Montana State, Idaho State, Eastern Washington, and Augustana. I have no idea what it takes to actually form a new FBS Conference, and it may be a practical impossibility.

I have always liked the idea of Delaware moving up to FBS. Their stadium is about the right size for a G5 conference, plus they're doing some renovations to add some suite level seating over the next couple of years.

Also selfishly, it's about an hour from where I live now and would be much easier to see FBS games since the idea of driving down 76 and experiencing Philly traffic to watch a less-than stellar Temple team is torture no one should endure.

I think that's it.
