I have attended many Homecomings since graduating from Ohio but few rival this year. Beautiful weather, a great crowd, bustling tailgating and of course the 110. The after game concert with the alumni band included was absolutely insane! Many universities claim to have the best band...They're Wrong, We Do! Many on this board often decry the universities' efforts at promoting themselves, so a congrats is due for this fabulous weekend. Oh yeah we also honored the Paw and won the football game.

Pa. Couldn’t agree more. I graduated in 1971 and this is probably one of the best homecoming ever. I can only had one negative. I was at the game with my wife. She said to me issues so we had to go and sit in the general admission disability area on the student side. Those student side restrooms are atrocious. We all know the nostalgia of Peden but some improvements need to be made. The least They could do is paint the doors and the inside of the restrooms. I know they’re not gonna upgrade the urinals, etc. but really have some pride and show it!

You could if you are so inclined send a donation to the Ohio University Foundation and earmark it for the very needs you've addressed. Years ago I learned that I could be either general - unrestricted - or very specific - restricted - with my donations.

My wife did not attend Ohio University but over 40 years of being together and traveling to Athens including having two kids attend, she commented that this was her favorite Homecoming of them all!

She ran off a list of things she enjoyed: Friday lunch at Jackie O's, evening cocktails at OU Inn, seeing her two members of the alumni 110 pound the streets, the parade atmosphere, running into old friends, making new friends, the TailGreat, the game, the superb half time show of Jesus Christ Super Star, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Sly and the Dance to the Music, the post game, running into Coach Solich and talking for several minutes with him and then dinner at the OU Inn. Well one additional thing was going to Glidden Saturday evening for the OU Jazz jam that then shifted to seeing our son join alums, old and new to play a session of jazz standards. What a weekend! Missed the food trucks on Friday as we had already eaten but that looked like fun.

True at the request of Harold McElhaney in 1978. Also used to put them on the helmets before the games.

No disrespect, PawPa, but Clemson initially was going to sue over it, but our lawyers pointed out that a bobcat paw and tiger paw were slightly different.  I've always hated it because it's so generic.  So many high schools have some version of it that it has no distinctively OHIO qualities.  Here in Athens County we have the Trimble Tomcats. I know that there are some real fans of our paw here, but I'm not one of them.

Well, I had forgotten, or never knew, these details about the copyright controversy. I do remember quite well the transition to the AttackCat and the suit by O$U that lead to The Settlement.

“Morgan maintains that he came up with the design in 1979 when he was working for Image Graphics in Athens.”

1979? The paw was on the helmet(and other uniforms) my freshman year for the 1978 season.

One of many details I find interesting about our logos - and the way the university uses and licenses them - is the current paw logo. Not only the reversal of policy in its use, but the curious fact that it's now symmetrical (as far as I can tell the original was asymmetrical). Also, the new version is angled to the right - the original was (almost) always angled to the left. I wonder if the changes were made to avoid paying someone.

In the original standards guide for the Paw, a 45’ tilt, left or right was appropriate.

The design of the paw has not changed since inception. The design was free form with the pads similar but not identical. It may have been mirror imaged by accident in some cases. The 45% tilt was to make it more aggressive and to differentiate it from existing schools that mounted it vertically. The client (McElhaney)specifically requested a paw print, but wanted it different from existing emblems.

This thread pains me to read as I had to miss it due to my kids' sports. Wish I could be in 2 places at once.

I also missed Homecoming and it sounds like it was a great Saturday in Athens. Plans are for tailgating and NIU game this Saturday with college buddies and family. Forecast of sunny skies with highs nearing 70.

I've been working on that for years, haven't yet figured out how to do it. I suspect I'll figure it out about the same time that nuclear fusion becomes the go-to way to produce electrical energy.

Thanks, I really like learning about stuff like this. I don't think the mirror image is a mistake. Wouldn't someone have to make an extra effort to make it symmetrical instead of just leaving it as is? I asked a licensee and they told me the image they were given by the university and required to use without deviation is symmetrical (and tilted to the right) so I do think as far as the officially trademarked logo the design has changed, technically, from asymmetrical to symmetrical.
