Thanks.

I really need a laugh today.

Curiosity struck me so I looked it up: Ohio is only 12-9 against Kent State since 2000.

I saw on ESPN that the consensus spread was Kent -11. Does that seem right? I thought it would be higher than that. I'm not a gambler, so I don't exactly understand these things. But, I was expecting more like Kent -20, or so. I mean, Kent not only has an offense, but they have a defense. The 17 point loss to Georgia last week was the smallest point spread for the Bulldogs in their four games so far this year. I know that comparative scores and comparative point-spreads can be deceiving, but in this case it seems that Kent is being under-estimated by the bookies.
This opened a 7. That surprised me. It's up to 11 5 which seems more reasonable.

PAIN.

I've never been less excited for an Ohio football season.

Frank won 6 in-a-row vs Kent State.

Now we're two score dogs. Team is going nowhere with Albin.

If Kent shuts down our offense this could be our biggest beat down in a long, long, time.

And

It is really difficult for me to even have false optimism.

Hope I'm wrong and Coach A. leads the Cats to their first MACC since the mid part of last century.

We are in the weakest division in FBS football, so this should be a realistic expectation.

Sadly going 6-6 would be exceeding expectations for this team and staff.

Not when it mattered he didn't.

You are aware that we've got a lot of kids out, right?

They are at home and playing a MAC opponent, they may dial it back a little. Unless our D caves I say 32-21.

Never thought I'd see the day that SBH became TA's biggest booster. I'll know he's gone crazy (or to the dark side) for sure when he starts supporting MAGA and the big orange down in Florida.

Someone was wondering if we'd get Michael Reghi on Play by play again in another thread but I'm not sure which one. It is him along with Ryan Cavanaugh. So no Je'Rod Cherry this week. We seem to get him a lot as well.

Did I miss it? In Russell’s rundown of the top single game passing records, I didn’t hear a mention of the 1968 game that OHIO won over Cincinnati 60-48. There was all kinds of passing in that game from both teams, with Cleve Bryant to Todd Snyder being a frequent combination for OHIO. I remember listening to this game and it was almost as wild as the Fordham game. I have a hard time believing it’s not in the top 10. Can anyone retrieve the box score for that game? I didn’t have time for an exhaustive search but a few attempts with DuckDuckGo came up empty.

The QB in 1968 for UC was Greg Cook, who threw for as many yards in 68' as Cleve did in his 3 years as a QB.

Cook threw for 554 yards in the loss at Ohio in 1968-- the NCAA record at the time -- and totaled 3,272 for the Bearcats that season per UC's hall of fame blurb for him.

Sports Reference shows Bryant threw for a career high of 1,524 yards that season and totaled 3,414 for his career at Ohio.

Yes, I remember that Cook threw for a ton of yards, also. I guess, OHIO must have had a slightly more balanced attack in that game. What stood out to me was the passing, though, on both sides. As I said, I was not present for the game but listened to it on the radio. That was the year I spent getting my master's degree at the Evil Empire in Cowtown. The game against Fordham this last Saturday had the same frenetic pace as this game back in 1968, and I was, therefore, reminded of it.

This all happened before I was born so I cannot speak from personal memory. I'm guessing that only a handful of regular's can. I read an archived SI article about this game 20 years ago and if I recall OUr attack wasn't remotely balanced either. Almost all of it was on the ground.

11.5 underdogs but do you blame them? What have we shown up to this point? Worst passing defense in all FBS. Do we think at this point things will change? Do we really have the personnel to make these changes? Do we blame the coaches? I have no idea.

This is a Kent State team WITHOUT Dustin Crum at QB and still double digit favorites. I'm sure WR Dante Cephas will light us up and have a career day (150+ receiving yards and 2 TDs is my guess). Last year had had 9 catches for 103 and a TD.

Please prove me wrong and give me some hope.

This article, written over 50 years, harkens back to old-school sports reporting by the likes of Grantland Rice, Red Smith and Damon Runyon. Was almost expected to read in an upcoming paragraph something about "outlined against a blue, gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again."

Found the box score.  I think what I was remembering the most about our passing attack in this game was the three TD passes.  Cleve did have a very respectable total passing yards also, but not nearly as good as Cook's.

Thanks for sharing the box score OCF. Scanning it I saw former Pomeroy Panther Phil Swindell’s name and was reminded that he was on that team. Phil was the TE I believe. I think another former Panther, Carson Crow, played center if I’m not mistaken. That 1964 Pomeroy team was pretty good. I think they only lost to Logan who had future ND player John Gasser. I can remember seeing Gasser play in those next day (Sunday morning) ND taped broadcasts that featured the great Linzy Nelson doing the PBP.

Remember watching this religiously after Mass (or was it before?) with my dad and brothers (pun intended). Can still hear in my head Lindsey Nelson's classic phrase — “and now we move to further action in the third period” - as the previous day's game had to be shortened to a 1-hour replay.

You're welcome, CatsUp. I remember when I was in high school Pomeroy had some pretty good teams, as did Wellston, sometimes. The real powerhouse team, though, at that time, was Jackson. They had a huge QB, Roger Hyden, who later played professional baseball. He was so tall and big that we'd joke that he could make a first down from five yards back just by falling down. I looked him up, and he was only 6'3", but compared to our Athens High team he towered over everyone. Gallipolis had some real good teams back then, too.

As an historical note, Gallia Academy H.S. at that time had more African American players than any other team in the SEOAL. This dates back to pre-Civil war days and the Lambert Lands, which spawned in 1863 the oldest, continuous celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation in the USA. I attended the 159th celebration a few weeks ago; they are always held on the weekend closest to September 22, the date of the preliminary proclamation issued in 1862. How many points do I get for squeaking in a Civil War reference in a discussion of SEO high school football?

Carson Crow still attends OHIO basketball games regularly. He may attend the football games as well, but if so, he doesn't sit anywhere near where I do.
