Found the box score. I think what I was remembering the most about our passing attack in this game was the three TD passes. Cleve did have a very respectable total passing yards also, but not nearly as good as Cook's.
Thanks for sharing the box score OCF. Scanning it I saw former Pomeroy Panther Phil Swindell’s name and was reminded that he was on that team. Phil was the TE I believe. I think another former Panther, Carson Crow, played center if I’m not mistaken. That 1964 Pomeroy team was pretty good. I think they only lost to Logan who had future ND player John Gasser. I can remember seeing Gasser play in those next day (Sunday morning) ND taped broadcasts that featured the great Linzy Nelson doing the PBP.
You're welcome, CatsUp. I remember when I was in high school Pomeroy had some pretty good teams, as did Wellston, sometimes. The real powerhouse team, though, at that time, was Jackson. They had a huge QB, Roger Hyden, who later played professional baseball. He was so tall and big that we'd joke that he could make a first down from five yards back just by falling down. I looked him up, and he was only 6'3", but compared to our Athens High team he towered over everyone. Gallipolis had some real good teams back then, too.
As an historical note, Gallia Academy H.S. at that time had more African American players than any other team in the SEOAL. This dates back to pre-Civil war days and the Lambert Lands, which spawned in 1863 the oldest, continuous celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation in the USA. I attended the 159th celebration a few weeks ago; they are always held on the weekend closest to September 22, the date of the preliminary proclamation issued in 1862. How many points do I get for squeaking in a Civil War reference in a discussion of SEO high school football?
Carson Crow still attends OHIO basketball games regularly. He may attend the football games as well, but if so, he doesn't sit anywhere near where I do.
