I just read about this kid at D3 Western Brown just outside of Cincinnati. Name's Drew Novak. He will break Joe Burrow's all time passing yards record in Ohio high school history likely early this season. Last year he:

-Threw for more than 5,000 yards
-Threw for 55 touchdowns
-Rushed for 21 touchdowns
-Had a completion percentage of 67%
-Was the Ohio D3 player of the year

Western Brown went 11-3 last year. Their lowest point total all season was 35 points in a loss to D3 state champion Clinton Massie. Their other losses were to 13-1 Granville and 8-3 Monroe.

Drew stands 6'6''. His only D1 offer is to FCS Stetson, who is like Dayton in that they don't offer football scholarships.

Recruiting is weird.

I know nothing at all about college recruiting or how to assess high school talent.

But based on this post alone, it feels like this is exactly the sort of player a school like Ohio should be taking a chance on. Seems like a high upside, low risk option with no competition.

The worst case? We burn a scholarship on a QB who doesn't play. We do that all the time. The best case, we uncover a diamond in the rough with upside. Presumably there has to be some way to use high school stats to project college performance, right?

Joe Burrow does not hold any All-Time passing records in Ohio.

He is a great HS QB who has had some things he needs to get better with, and he’s done some of that this off season. He’s still got a season and lots can shake out for the young man.

Here are his offers as of now. Ashland University, Stetson University, Glenville State University, Notre Dame College and Thomas More University

He could be a victim of the portal. More schools are filling up their recruiting with Community College players and D1A transfers. Of Ohio's 13 recruits for 2022, six are from CCs and one is from another D1A school. And many non-"P" schools (and even some "P"s) don't want to recruit a rough diamond, for fear he'll hit the portal in a year or two -- after they've polished him and maybe built a team around him -- and maybe wind up against them for a team in their own league.

Or despite his stat line, coaches and scouts see flaws which they feel needs improved upon at this time. And he may very well achieve that offer that catapults him in the recruiting wars.

I saw him play vs Jackson last season. Excellent player. The rumor there was that he had been offered by a Big 12 school...apparently that rumor was false.

Upper Sandusky had a player, Greg Micheli, about 17 years ago now who put up incredible numbers as quarterback for a few years, both passing and running. He was the Ohio Division IV defensive player of the year as a junior and then the offensive player of the year as a senior. His only Division I offer was Dayton as a punter. He ended up going to Mount Union and won multiple national titles and was the national player of the year as a senior. He probably could have played QB at a higher level, but you never know.

Realistically, around Ohio there are quite a few quarterbacks putting up big numbers. Maybe not quite as big, but not far off. Across the whole country, there are hundreds of them. Plus there are guys with a lot of ability, who for various reasons, don't put up huge numbers. There just aren't that many Division I spots to go around.

Still has zero Division I offers. This is very strange given he is a legit 6'5" (listed at 6'6") and has put up the numbers that he has.

Well, Ben Roethlisberger wasn't heavily recruited out of high school, either. But, in his case he only played QB his senior year. He was a WR before that. So, you never know.

bottom line is recruiting in the mac is tough to say the least. no high level prospect will wanna play for a mac school. sadly mac teams have no chance for a national title and litle if any tv time. furthermore its way difficult for mac players to get drafted cause their stats will b e in question due to the caliber of players hes achieved that against. wouldnt want the nightmare that is trying to recruit decen players to a mac school

It’s not difficult for MAC players to drafted in the NFL. Just take a look at past drafts. We’ve even had high first-round draft picks.

No offense, but at this point I would be up for signing an affiliation agreement with Ohio State. Let them choose our coaches, kids they want but can't have, send them our way, don't schedule us, and if a kid flat out balls out send em up there, and if a kid doesn't perform, guarantee em a landing spot here in Athens.

It's not far off before two colleges do it and become effectively in cahoots with each other. Question is who are two schools that are like-minded academically that won't step on the other's toes.

Thanks for the stats. My point was that if you are an NFL-calbre player, you'll get drafted from the MAC just as easily as from the SEC. As your stats show, which is no surprise, is that the MAC does not have as many NFL-calibre players as most other conferences.

Not as many as the AAC but they are losing their best programs.
