And BG just takes down marshall!!
On any given Saturday....

Southern Illinois has done what no MAC team has done this season -- beaten a "P". They took down Northwestern by 7.

Oh, and Missouri State leads #10 Arkansas 27-17 in the 4th.

It's true that the MAC has not beaten a "P team" yet this year, but to be fair Vandy was on the ropes at NIU until the unfortunate Lombardi injury. WMU has played a good game against Pitt, but Pitt is fired up to get revenge over last year's defeat by WMU, which for much of the season last year was their only defeat.

Now that a MAC "bottom feeder" beat high-flying Marshall, and another perennial weakling, EMU, beat a PAC 12 team, maybe the entire premise of this thread is off base.

It was the dose of reality I needed. I’m back at the green Kool-Ade Bar. Bring on Fordham!

The Sun Belt came back to earth this week with bupkis vs "P" teams and losses to BG (T'erd) and Rice (Louisiana). They still have the most wins vs "P"s but their G5 record isn't so good anymore. Here's the OOC summary:

AAC 17-13 (1-10 vs “P”; 8-2 vs G5; 8-1 vs 1AA/FCS)
CUSA 15-17 (0-7 vs “P”; 7-9 vs G5; 8-1 vs 1AA/FCS)
MAC 12-22 (1-15 vs “P”; 3-5 vs G5; 8-2 vs 1AA/FCS)
MWC 16-18 (1-14 vs “P”; 6-2 vs G5; 9-2 vs 1AA/FCS)
SBC 20-19 (3-11 vs “P”; 7-8 vs G5; 10-0 vs 1AA/FCS)

I was wondering why BG had its homecoming day so early. They have two home games in mid-October, vs Buffalo and MOFO. But instead of homecoming, they have a bigger draw for those games -- Oct 8 is Josh Harris Bobblehead Day and Oct 15 is Kory Lichtensteiger Bobblehead Day.

Maybe we should have some bobbleheads for midweek MACtion games.

Bobbleheads I'd like to see:

TJ Carrie
Frank Solich
Dion Byrum
Todd Snyder
Bill Hess

There are others, of course, but those are the first that come to mind.

Well, there is one other that comes to mind, but will probably never happen, for obvious reasons -- Cleve Bryant, the player, as distinct, for more than one reason, from Cleve Bryant the coach.

Yes, I said that there were others, and Vince would certainly be a good candidate. Problem is that the AD's office doesn't even know he ever existed, as they left him off the printed programs (remember those archaic things?) when they used to list "Bobcats in the NFL." It's a new administration now, so maybe they've figured out that he was once a Bobcat. BTW, Vince passed away at the age of 87 in 2019. RIP!

I’m with you OCF. I’ve never understood why he’s received little to no recognition by the university athletics department over the years. It can be argued that he was the best and most impactful former Bobcat ever to play in the NFL. My personal opinion is it’s not much of an argument. Its akin to mentioning the best NBA players who are former Bobcats and leaving out Gary Trent.

Seems like a good time to bump this. Watching the Marshall/Louisiana game tonight. Unremarkable, pedestrian, sloppy, beatable all come to mind. MAC hasn't been lapped.

Marshall looks pretty bad. I Don know what’s happened there but it’s not good.
By the way, I noticed in the game write up that Louisiana has 11 takeaways this year. Wish we had that.

The MAC's football teams are scrimmage fodder for the P5 schools.

BUT not good enough to be bowl fodder for P5 teams that made a bowl, because they played MAC teams.

Suppose that defines G5 conferences in a nutshell.

When the bowls actually meant something, it was fine. I don't hate the bowl system as much as I hate how many there are that completely water down the point of postseason play. Extra practices and once in a lifetime experiences are great for the team, but for the fans they stink. The old bowl system was the best alternative to not having a playoff in place that could/would include the G5. If your conference champ was guaranteed a bowl game against a P5 school, it would be fine. But now even the conference champ just plays against a peer program, more or less.

An expanded playoff hopefully fixes this, but if not, I think they should change the water mark for bowl eligibility to at least eight wins.

Bowls are sponsored by cities to promote tourism. Note that the lowest tier bowl games don't generate the same attendance, however, so there is a point of diminishing returns. I don't see a lot of cities with bowl games that desire to halt them, so I don't see them reducing the number of bowl teams. On the other hand, I don't see a flood of cities applying to host bowls, so I don't think we will move the other way (even more schools going to bowls), either.

It seems to me that the an important driver now is the need of ESPN and others to help fill the live TV schedule. The attendance seems to me to be dropping, even for the bigger bowls. Thinking back to 2 bowls that I attended in St Pete and New Orleans, the attendance seemed abysmal, but I guess it had some value for the local economy. Somebody had to lose money on the t shirts that were made for the bowl with Troy and Ohio on them. I doubt they sold 20 of those.

A lot of the bowls (especially the lower tier bowls) are outright owned by ESPN. I’m sure they have local bowl committees using them to either promote tourism or business, but the tourism is definitely a secondary (or even tertiary) concern for ESPN owned games

And this is the inherent problem. Because ESPN controls the bowl system, but the NCAA makes the rules on bowl eligibility. And the NCAA like the money greedy w*ores that they are aren't going to turn down extra money in their pocket, even if they don't even control their own sport's top level playoff. If the NCAA changed the standard for bowl eligibility, you could get rid of at least 10 bowls right now, but they're never going to do that. Or get rid of them completely with a playoff system similar to the FCS or lower divisions.

Once again the NCAA shows absolutely no teeth when it comes to FBS football and lets the major conferences and television providers decide how this show will be run.
