Joined the broadcast late but heard them say something about Bates getting x rays on his left wrist.  Anybody know what happened?  Sure seems like our QB's get injured a lot.

And here we see a distinct difference between our shoestring program and programs like our first road game: Bates injury, according to The Post, is undetermined and he will be seen for an MRI on Tuesday.

We got nobody to do it on a Sunday? Or the holiday Monday?

Man, that's a dose of sad reality.

Nope, because we do not have our own hospital or facilities, and many of these medical procedures have to be driven to Columbus, if that makes you feel better.

Does it really matter whether the MRI is on Sunday or Tuesday? Pretty sure they have to go to Columbus anyway.

Two days makes no difference in diagnosis and treatment?

I'll respectfully disagree.

Yes, I am sure the primary treatment is no different, the MRI will be used more for precautionary reasons, treatment and a diagnosis is ongoing, and an MRI is just one piece of the process.  May just be a booboo, and the MRI is totally for precautionary reasons too.  Little ice, and be good as new....crossing fingers :)

I've broken my hand before and had broken/torn ligaments in fingers. The docs always told me it didn't matter of a break vs. torn ligaments, they'll splint it or put it in a cast.

I'm a dunce when it comes to medical conditions, but don't they have to usually wait a day or two for swelling to subside in many instances anyways? That seems to be in ankle injuries at least.

If the AD wanted work out an agreement with O'Bleness this could be done in Athens.  They have MRI facilities and one of the best radiologists in the state of Ohio.  If anyone doubts this, PM me and I'll give the name and the doctor's background.  Also, I believe Holzer has MRI facilities in Athens, though I'm not totally sure about that.  I also don't know much about the expertise of their radiologists, but they generally have some top quality people.  I'm sure the docs we send people to in C-bus have more specific expertise in sports medicine but reading an MRI of a hand, or brain, or neck, etc., is something that can be done here if an agreement was in place and the need was felt to do it locally.

More things are done in town, but there are still many trips to Columbus, Cincinnati, even Cleveland and Pittsburgh depending of the injury and the specialist needed.

The Holzer orthopod is perfectly fine for putting in your artificial knees, but not so up to date on the latest techniques for top flight athletes.

One thing you are not taking into account here OCF, is that Ohio Athletics pays the team doctors very little, they make their money from the services provided, and MRI's are a big source of income.  I would imagine if you took that income away, you would have to up what the department pays them, which in this day I am sure we can agree is not the most feasible.

So if Bates has  to miss a few games, does that put Tettleton on the two deep? I was thinking since he did not play last night, the staff may be thinking of redshirting Tettleton.
I was thinking Bates got the start just to give him some experience as starter in case Boo went down.

This sounds horrible, but I completely forgot about Tettleton last night. I have to think if Frank had his druthers, we would have gone up by 30 or so in the second half and we might have seen Tettleton for a series. Or maybe not if redshirting is an option.

Correct me if I'm wrong.  Depending on the severity of Bates' injury I believe Tettleton can appear in the next 3 games and then not play the remaining of the season and still be granted the redshirt this season, or does this usually only impact players who get injured early in the year and get granted a gray shirt??

Based on Holzer's website, there is an Open MRI in Athens, but the more detailed MRI is only in Gallipolis.  So it makes sense to go to Columbus where there can be a more detailed look at the problem.  If Athens didn't have a MRI it would be more of a backwater than I had thought, but at least it has a type of MRI which is better than nothing.

I can't really come up with a good reason why the MRI was not done earlier, maybe a Dr can tell us.

What you say may be true John where a doctor may be part of a clinic where all the testing is done , but most, if not the majority, of testing is probably done elsewhere where the Doc's at their own office don't make a penny on such a test.   And I would guess, but do not now , if a Clinic like Holzer have Docs a s partners.  If not, it may make little or no difference to the income of the Dr whether the test is done or not.

Another fine point, does the University pay the Dr or does an insurance company pay the Dr?  I know it ultimately gets paid by the University, but does anyone know if the U is self insuring?

The primary physicians for Orthopedic injuries is Dr. Raymond Tesner of Sports Medicine Grant.  Most all MRI's are done at Sports Medicine Grant, do you think this is a coincidence?  This is where the doctors make their money, and they would prefer their group doing the diagnostics over an outside group.

As for insurance, the Athletes insurance (that of the parents) is the primary provider, and the University is secondary, covering most things that the families insurance does not pick up.  The University is self-insured in some areas like property and theft,  but not in this.

There must be some continuity factor in having local physicians treat the athletes.  That is, having the same dr. do all of the treatment (so not travelling to Columbus or wherever repeatedly even for minor stuff).  Should help expertise develop locally and familiarity with a given player's condition.

Monroe,

Ohio has a general team physician that sees the players on a regular basis and handles a lot of routine issues.  Specialist though do not exist in Athens (with the desired degree of experience in the field and dealing with Athletes) so those issues are primarily handled outside of Athens.  I know in the past Ohio University Athletes have been as far as Colorado Springs to see a specialist and get an diagnosis.  These guys get top flight medical care, and they always have the right for a second opinion.

Dr Tesner and Grant Sports Medicine have been partnered with OU athletics since at least the early 90s. Wannamaker is correct that they send patients to their MRI facility in Columbus as well. It's pretty much a no brainer that our athletes would seek evaluation and treatment at Grant.

If you go to the OU football website and look at the pics...you can see the fingers of Bates left hand being bent backwards as he is falling on the left hand....

The Post article made it sound like he would be back for Toledo earliest, otherwise for the tOSU game.
