The two MAC leaders in pass efficiency defense are Toledo (#6 in the country at 108) and Ball State (#38 in the country at 123). Ball State has been effective the last couple weeks, where they faced 2 of the top 3 passers in the MAC, Schlee (Kent) and Finn (Toledo). Let's hope Kurtis has a good day, but Ohio is going to need to run the ball, too. Fortunately, Kent hasn't had a great rushing defense so far, giving up an average of 184 yards/game, last in the MAC.

I was wondering last week, as some were seeing a clear path to the MACC after the Buffalo win, if we would be favored in this game. I thought it would depend on what happened yesterday. I think that we will be now after a fairly easy win and a BSU loss, probably by as many as 3 or 4.

But if we want that path especially clear root for CMU tonight. Buffalo came into Athens on a five game winning streak and CMU is only 3-6 but with this in Mount Pleasant CMU has a good shot. It's about 50/50 in my eyes. So for tonight, Fire Up Chips!

Ball State is only 110th in rushing defense. Its going to be possible to run the ball on them as the Cats did against Miami. Miami was 22nd in rushing D and Seth made easy work I thought in that one. Ball has lost to Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Toledo. Its a trap game as they do have a fairly good offense and they are fighting for a bowl so I can see motivation. The past 4 games for Ohio there was always a moment where it looks like the opponent is going to make a game of it then will to compete is broken by a big Ohio play.

Cardinal National Leaders

J. Paddock #28 passing (2333 yrds, 16 TDs)
C. Steele # 3 rushing (1280 yds, 12 TDs)
J. Jackson #23 receiving (755 yds, 3 TDs)

Simple game plan.

#1 STOP THE RUN. Carson Steele can not go over 100 yards rushing. Sell out if need be. We have the offense to put up 30+ points per game.

#2 Make Paddock throw. He has 11 interceptions with those TDs. He's bound to make a mistake. Have to capitalize when he does.

#3 When he does throw it, make sure there is a triangle defense zone around Jackson.
That's the guy he trusts the most.

The way the conference has played out, I can’t help but wonder if Albin and staff will manage things a bit differently for this game, particularly as the other relevant game(s) play out Tuesday night? For instance, at some point does he rely more on the depth guys in order to try to keep players healthy for BG?

Ohio can clinch the east division with a win over Ball State and a BG loss to Toledo. Toledo won the west division last night.

Steele has been the most impressive RB in the MAC this season. Ohio can still win, however, even if he gets his 100-plus yards rushing.

I'm guessing the line will be Ohio -1.5 or -2.0.

Seems the offensive key will be neutralizing the Card's pass rush.

You think OU is gonna be up by so much Albin calls off the dogs?

Man, you're a lot more confident in this defense than I am.

Going into this week Paddock is tied for 3rd in FBS for most INTs with 11. That makes me feel more hopeful about our secondary on Tuesday night.

Sagarin rates BGSU as the 11th best team in the MAC, ahead of only Akron:

Wow. 15 is a big line for a MAC game but especially when you consider it's a mid-November game of championship contenders.

Hopefully Vegas is right and we know the MAC title game when we go to bed Tuesday night.

Thus far, BG has beaten the #5 and #6 teams in the East (Miami, Akron) and the #5 and #6 teams in the West (NIU, WMU). Now they face the #1 team in the West and the #1 Team in the East. Can they beat both, and the repeat with another win over the #1 team in the West?

The one thing I do know is that BG-Toledo is a rivalry game, and those can produce unpredictable results, and anything can happen.

That would be better yet but I’m more thinking about another possible scenario. For example, what if BG is two touchdowns ahead of Toledo late in the third quarter (both games start at 7:00). Do we continue to play to win our game with our regulars, or do we play to win by subbing liberally, knowing if we beat BG the following week we are in the MACCG; no matter what happens against the Cardinals? We might even want to consider this from the beginning in Muncie. Before we say we would never do this remember it’s been 54 years folks.

I suspect Toledo, having clinched the West, will have their best interests in mind too when it comes to staying healthy. However, I do think there are two things going for us that might prevent Toledo taking such tactics. It’s a rivalry game and it’s not the last game of the regular season.

Yeah, maybe the “doing it from the beginning” part. Not so much the rest of it.

Don't think we have to worry about BG blowing out Toledo and changing our approach tonight, but regardless I am certain the coaches won't want to even hear any in-game updates from the other Maction game.

I see others point of view but I’m looking at this as the Bobcats basically being in the playoffs beginning next week. They really only have to beat BG to go to the MACCG. If the games tonight are not trending our way late and it’s evident we aren’t going to clinch tonight why shouldn’t we see that we go into the BG game as healthy as possible. I don’t see it as being much different than what Bengals’ coach Zac Taylor did for their last regular season NFL game, against the Browns, last year. Although we don’t know for sure if anyone would have been seriously hurt, he decided it wasn’t worth the risk.
