We seemed to have no energy, no intensity, & no emotion all night.
We were not up for this game.

It was unfortunate, but I refuse to allow people to talk like that around my boys.  Just because we are at a football game, it does not excuse us from acting with some sort of manners.

Is this the part where I highlight that Peden is a public facility and thus free speech rules apply?

Tim, you are correct, and this is supported by Cohen v. California in 1971.  However, this does not and will not stop Universities from enforcing policies to promote a positive environment for their fans.  Unless someone wants to sue a particular University, these policies will continue.

Note, Private Colleges can enforce rules that Ohio University can not.

Cohen is still a fine line.  Political vs. otherwise.  Since the MD/Duke incident a few years ago, MD now has a policy where they can eject, but not arrest.  The back of the ticket for many public university events now has a statement similar to the following:

Abusive language or disorderly conduct is unacceptable and unwelcome.  Profanity, racial or sexist comments, or intimidating actions directed at the student-athletes, coaches or officials will not be tolerated. Fans who display unsportsmanlike behavior may be ejected from the stadium and lose all ticket privileges.

Nebraska states it as following: The University of Nebraska promotes good sportsmanship and conduct among our alumni, students and friends. Inappropriate conduct, activity or any discourtesy should be reported to stadium personnel (fan hosts, gate attendants, vendors, etc.) or the Athletic Events Office at (402) 472-1960.

The reality is that it is easy for the University to find "another reason" to eject the fan - e.g., not cooperating with law enforcement and not rely on the language.

CC:  Glad you brought that up because the new hot thing that carefully crafting a rule based on "Standards" and "Acceptable Behavior" to enforce rules at Sporting Events held on public property.  One of these will be challenged as they are on the radar of 1st Amendment watch groups.  Attached is one such group's take on this type of law.  As of now, Cohen v. California is the measuring stick on this issue.  But as I stated earlier, many places are more concerned with keeping the environment friendly for the majority of their fans, and not worried about the rights of the proceived abuser.  Any way a good little read of an opinion piece.

A number of times now, I've had to ask people to move so I can sit in my seats. Half of the time I'll just sit in open ones if they're available...

It's also a bit of a pain when I'm bringing parents to the game as I did Saturday.  If I wanted to sit with them, and not purchase a ticket for myself (which seems a bit stupid, given I pay plenty through my fees and receive free tickets as a student), my and the girlfriend's only option to sit with them was to sit in the (sold) seats next to them and be thankful there were seats a row behind unsold that the gracious rightful owners of our seats could use.
