Heard Thom Brennaman talking on FoxOhio during the Reds telecast tonight concerning the Ohio at OSU game.  Says he has been struggling with which team to root for, but that the biggest factor for him is this:  the most important priority is the state of Ohio, and OSU has the only chance this season to win a national title, and he wants to see the state of Ohio get a national title...so I suppose he means he's rooting for Ohio State.  He did say that he would not have attended school anywhere else except Ohio University.

While I would like to say I want my state to win the National Title, I place school pride before state pride.  If he truly was a Bobcat fan he would see this point too.  Besides, if the Little Brother up North gets caught with his pants down then he doesn't deserve the National Title out of foolishness....and inferiority.

In Thom's defense, he had a glorious shout out to Ohio University during his play by play broadcast of the Bears' game Sunday.

"Ohio State will take on one of the finest centers of academic excellence in America, the Ohio University Bobcats."

I thought it was great!

Yeah, I have heard him give Ohio University some pretty good shout outs during Reds games this year also.

Bummer.  Brennaman does talk up Ohio.  But, this will be our plight forever unless we decide to invest more in athetics.

That is my thinking. While I am an Ohio State fan since birth, I am rooting for my alma mater to win. Just for that reason, if Ohio State can't beat Ohio (or any other team they would be 20+ pt favorites) then they don't deserve it.

On the other hand, if Ohio loses, I can handle that loss alot better knowing my 2nd favorite team won and could win a national title.

Another thought... I just read Stewart Mandel's mailbag on SI.com. He said in a remark in a previous column about always rooting for your alma mater over your childhood/teenage favorite. In his email-bag there was some interesting comments regarding his thoughts. Especially the guy that grew up a Michigan fan but attented Appalachain St. But yet couldn't enjoy their epic upset.

Tell Thom I'm inviting him to a tailgate this weekend at the Horseshoe, where the only dish to be served is Trodge's Mashed Potato Delight. Dumba*s.

My brother's a die had Michigan fan but lives in Ohio, do you think he sees OSU winning a championship as "winning one for Ohio"? hardly.

Who gives a crap about Thom Brennaman and other MAC graduates like Ben Curtis the golfer who cheer for O$U over Kent State where he graduated from.

Apparently a lot of people. There is constant weeping and gnashing of teeth.

We are talking sports fanaticism. Live and let live. It's all in good fun.

If developing Ohio's program will switch loyalties, Ohio would just be adding the alleged bandwagon sheep anyway, so why are they wanted? It would probably be like an obscure rock band who makes it big, and many of the original fans are angry that too many people know their band exists. It loses the alternative lifestyle/exclusivity factor at that point.

Trust me on this.  There's no real "agonizing" going on over this weeks game.  As a fraternity brother of Thom and one that talked with him at halftime of this weeks Bears game, Brennaman would LOVE to see the 'Cat's prevail this week.  When together, he's always made a point of bringing up Bobcat's in the NFL and how he adds a little special something when he gets the chance to mention their names.

That said, when he bypassed attending OSU and came to Athen's in the early 80's, he was already an OSU fan and took heat from several of the brothers for it throughout his time on campus (most of the bitching came from out-of-state brothers).  However, he never/rarely missed a home Bobcat football or basketball game while he was there AND truly ridiculed those that failed to go to the games from our house.  I still remember him making sure those around us would stand every time the band started  "Stand Up And Cheer."  Bottom line, he still bleeds green but also is still loyal to his screwed-up childhood team to the north.

Interesting thing is...I've heard Thom's dad several times over the past three decades wax eloquently AGAINST those who do not root for their alma maters no matter who they may be playing.

I'm not turning against Thom over this...would just prefer that he use this matchup as an opportunity to make it clear his no. 1 loyalty is to his alma mater.

And I do appreciate the shout outs he gives to Ohio on his broadcasts.

As a baseball writer, I've been running into Thom in press boxes for years, and we always talk about OU. I'm sure he's rooting for the Bobcats, probably just didn't want to alienate too many of his viewers by dogging OSU.

Nothing would be sweeter than spoiling Ohio State's National Title hopes on Saturday.
