In this week's FCS polls, Wofford moves up to #14 and #17. Per Sagarin, they have a strength rating of 67.2, making them the #6 FCS, and the #85 team in the country, including both FCS and FBS schools. Ohio is currently rated 66.95, coming in at #88. If Wofford were in the MAC, they would be behind only Temple 71.65, NIU 70.79, and CMU 68.88.

I don't think we would have anticipated Wofford actually improving our stregnth of schedule.

For what it's worth, Wofford rated higher that Ohio in 2007 and 2008, so this isn't the first time. There are some good football teams in FCS, and Wofford is a well coached fundamentally sound team.

Lemme get this straight:

We spend $19-22 mil on an athletic department and a little more to call ourselves FBS.
Wofford spends around $12 mil (according the NCAA), offers two more sports, AND...ranks ahead of us on a key ranking?!

So we paid them...beat them (while not playing well)...and they still rank ahead of us?

A few things come to mind...
1. College Football's ranking systems make NO sense.
2. We're spending more money to stay behind a program that we are supposed to see as inferior to our own?

AND...unlike us...you can purchase on field merchandise...

Incredible!

Well, Medler, of course, the Sagarins are based on all the games played...I think the Sagarins, while not perfect, are pretty good.

An interesting tidbit...I saw that Wofford played AT Georgia Southern in their last game, and won, 33-31.  Attendance?  Almost 22,000.  More than we had for BGSU.

More fuel for your fire re:  FCS programs doing better than MAC schools in some ways.

Or you could look at it this way... Our team was AWFUL to start this season. Uninspired (or rusty I guess) quarterback play, poor execution on the o-line, etc... We couldn't buy a first down! And we still beat those clowns.

Early in the year the Sagarin ratings are not that good, but as the year goes on, and all the teams become "connected", then they begin to make more sense. Also Ohio is clearly improving, so I expect the rating to be higher at the end of the year than it is now. Preseason I was looking for a rating in the 70-71 range.
