I thought I heard that UB was eliminated from MAC East contention. Am I wrong about that?
Ohio needs to win their game against Bowling Green to win the East. There is no other path at this point but we are still the only team that controls their own destiny.
Bowling Green must beat Ohio and hope that Buffalo loses at least one of their two remaining games. If that happens Bowling Green and Ohio are both 6-2 and Bowling Green wins on head to head.
Buffalo must win out and hope that Bowling Green beats Ohio. If that happens then all three teams are 6-2 and 1-1 against the other two. Buffalo wins based on having a 4-1 record against the East as Ohio and Bowling Green would both also have a loss to Kent State.
If this game is cancelled and Buffalo beats Kent State and Bowling Green beats Ohio then all three teams still have two loses. If you'll recall last season in women's basketball Kent State, Western Michigan, and Bowling Green were all tied for sixth with a conference record of 10-10. Ohio was ninth with a record of 9-10 having failed to be able to make up one COVID cancellation. The MAC ruled Ohio tied for sixth as well based on losses alone and Ohio as 3-3 in H2H games and Kent was the odd team out.
I remember in 2020 we were hoping that if we beat Buffalo that we could tie Buffalo with 1 loss even though we had several less wins and some were saying the MAC would STILL rule in OUr favor if that happened.
Snow is not COVID and there were special COVID rules so this might not apply but , IMO, 5-2 is not tied with 6-2. Tiebreakers are very arbitrary things. Win/loss records are not so arbitrary. We are used to Head to Head and Divisional record in the US as common tiebreakers but that is not how things are in most sports leagues around the world. I think if they say that Buffalo wins the East by virtue of being 1/2 game up in an arbitrary second tiebreaker and that trumps being 1/2 game behind period its silly. In this case it might be a little more fair because 5-2 would very probably would have been 6-2 since the game they would have lost is against Akron. It also might help if they do rule that since Bowling Green still would not go into OUr game controlling its own destiny.
