Looks like Kent pays $425,000 to Purdue so they can roll with the Tide on Sept. 3. Earth to Jim Schaus drop out of the New Mexico State road game and make a little money. Work out a home and home with the Boilers and save Frank a trip to La Cruces. I know it is easier said than done but it would be sweet to see Purdue in Peden in a couple of years and we could go into Ross-Ade and knock them off next season while pocketing some dough.

That's actually a pretty good idea.  Which means we won't do it.

We should be playing Nebraska....I have a whole rant laid out, just haven't had time to put pen to paper.

But yes, this Purdue scenario was the first thing I thought when I read this.

Although it will cost us the marquee return game with NMSU if we bail.

By the way, I've been screaming we should play Purdue for a long time.....I guess it just makes too much sense to play a money game against a marginal school from a big conference for solid money....only 3.5 hours away from our largest alumni base.

This sounds like the scheduling break Ohio fans have been waiting for. We'll see how Schaus handles it, if at all. Fortunately for Ohio, in the likely event NMSU demands a road game we can travel to Las Cruces in 2013 instead of scheduling our currently empty 3rd home game that year.

So basically a 1 and 1 with Purdue 2011-'12, away then home, and an away game at NMSU in 2013 will not disrupt our normal 2-2 OOC routine.

P.S. We need to capitalize on this Nebraska opportunity while Frank is in office. With his storied history in Lincoln and our recent recruiting successes in that part of the country it only makes sense.

I have heard rumors that a Nebraska game is in the works!  With that said, I am fairly certain that none of you truly understand the intricacies of putting a schedule together.  I doubt it is as easy or matter of fact as you make it seem.  Jim Schaus clearly has a philosophy that he has put in place and, gasp, its working.  We staring at our 2nd straight Bowl Game, the fifth in our history.  I may not be entirely in agreement with the games scheduled, but I see that he has a strategy and that he is sticking to and it is working.

Bobcat Love, I am curious about your thoughts on the Season Ticket base.  You have floated the theory around that our attendance will continue to struggle with the teams we are bringing into Peden.  Yet, it seems to me that the season ticket base and overall attendance has been WAY up this year!  More than 20,000 for Wofford?  I know it won't happen, but maybe it is time for you to admit that it isn't all about who you are playing.  Perhaps people just attach themselves to a winner?  Which is all we have done with the current strategy.

I personally think a home-and-home with Purdue is a million times better than a home-and-home with NMSU, for several reasons. (I've had a recurring dream  for years of us beating Purdue at home.)

But, that said, it wouldn't make any money. With home-and-homes, you pretty much keep gate receipts and pay for visiting team travel. While the crowd for Purdue will be bigger, it probably won't be that much bigger than NMSU, using examples of Wofford v. UConn. And we didn't even have to offer $5 tickets for Wofford to get 20K. Say we sell 5,000 more tickets for Purdue and Peden is bursting at the seams, that's only $100,000 more (incorrectly assuming NONE of those extras were students using freebies). And then there's a chance we might have to pay a buyout to NMSU that would negate any extra revenue.

Even if it's a financial wash, I still think we should do it, though. Most definitely. Go for it Frank and Big Jim!

Keep in mind you could sell ALL of Peden's Season Tickets for 1 year and nail down some minimal OBC donations by bringing in Nebraska for a home game. Plus you would do wonders for the Athens economy to have all those people travel in for the game.

Maybe it's just too easy and makes too much sense?

Yes that could very well happen, but then a quarter of our tickets would have been sold to Nebraska fans, thus lowering our attendance for the rest of our home games.

Nobody seems to complain for the 2 hours after halftime that nobody is in the stands....as long as it's paid for, the precedent is already set that nobody cares about butts in seats.

Unless I misread, the Nebraska post doesn't mention anything about a home game for Ohio. I would think this would be a money game just like OSU and Penn State games.

i would think a Nebraska game would be like the OSU game, a single game for a big payday. That said, it still makes some sense for a couple reasons. First of all, with Nebraska in the Big Ten-eleven-twelve, rather than the Big Twelve-ten, local fans might have more interest. Secondly, Nebraska has been an active recruiting area in recent years, with players like Leuck, Bunner, Davis, Donahue, Lechner and Keller coming from Nebraska. They are recruiting additional players from that area, including QB/P Darrius Vick for 2011 and QB/P Ty Bender for 2012, and probably a few others.

Didn't Duke do this for the Alabama game this year? I'd be interested to see who bought the season tickets and what their numbers have been like after the game.

In any case, it would be nice to get a bigger name into Peden, the team obviously has been doing well over the years so it'd be nice for the AD to get them something on home turf to showcase it.

the fact that we have done better the last couple years is the precise reason that we aren't getting BCS teams to come to Peden.  It is a trap game for them and they don't want to risk it!  The only way to get those teams in is to do a 2 for 1, which I believe we should do very sparingly.  I'd prefer the 1 big road game against PSU, OSU, Nebrasks, etc. a year than selling 4,000 more tickets for a home game against those teams!  If revenue is they key component, that makes more sense.

I think the Ohio State thrashing this year gives more credit to the Jim Schaus scheduling.  We are 4-3 right now instead of the 3-4 we would be if we had another BCS opponent, with the exception of a few possible W's.  Realistically we are not going to win those games and that could mean the difference between a bowl and no bowl, which ultimately means the difference on the recruiting front!

Um, we are 4-3 with a Sagarin rating of 100 and a SOS of 139 and a blowout loss to a significantly overrated in-state power....I'm not exactly proud of where we're at right now.

I did not just read above about bringing Nebraska in for a home game at Peden, did I?

Anyone $ who $$ thinks $$$ that's $$$$ going $$$$ to $$$$$ happen is intoxicated.

Our sched is not the best this year but the path we are on is reasonable:  build a winning program and they (fans, better oppoents) will come.  Better opponents because the big boys will not give us the respect which we hope we deserve.  (That is, Oklahoma, for example, will see us as a relatively easy game in a year in which their out-of-conf games include perceived toughies such as, for instance, USC and LSU.)

The only question is:  can we keep steadily on the upward, winning path?

OK, work with me on this one, it's a bit of a stretch but...

Remember when our friend "Rufus" attacked Brutus a few weeks ago?  The crazy kid in the suit said the only reason he became Rufus was to tackle Brutus in Columbus.  OK, so my point?  Kids in high school that have an opportunity to play football in college do the same dang thing.

If they look at our schedule and see Purdue, Nebraska, Penn State, Alabama or the likes (at least once a year), they too want to join up (hopefully not just to tackle their mascot).  When we parade our future schedule these days to recruits, it's not exactly a draw to the school.  We need to have a balance of big-time drawing power for the fans AND the future players.  Right now, we really don't offer anything other than "hey, we can go 8-4 and possibly be in the GoDaddy bowl.

Don't get me wrong, I love what is going on these days/past years, it's just that we need to take bigger steps now to insure we're gonna be where we want down the road.

BobcatLove, you just made my point for me.  We have that schedule and are still 4-3. Imagine your anger if we had the schedule you desire.  You would be complaining about our coaching staff not getting it done.  We are Ohio, not Ohio State.

For the Pitt game we had 12,000 tickets sold, not a ton of revenue generated at our home games.

I agree with this.  The only thing that I'd add is that not only would increased ticket sales help offset the cost of any NMSU buyout, but so would the fact that the travel costs we'd incur in a series with Purdue would be substantially less than one with NMSU.  Add to that the short and long-term program building benefits of offering a home game against an attractive Big 10 opponent, and I think the overall benefit would even warrant eating some money on any buyout for NMSU (although that is obviously a harder case to make in this budgetary climate).

Ultimately, though, it takes two to tango, and I could easily see Purdue not being interested in replacing a series with a second-tier MAC team with one against a much more recently competitive Ohio squad, especially after the embarassment of losing at home to a MAC team this year.  Moreover, I believe that the game Kent just backed out on was a straight buy-game, and not a home-and-home, so it isn't clear that Purdue would have any interests in coming to Athens as part of a replacement agreement.

The strategy is Mashall home-away, FCS, WAC/SBC home-away, BCS money game. For the BCS games, the schedule has @Rutgers 2011, @Penn St 2012, @Louisville 2013, @Kentucky 2014, @Minnesota 2015. There is also a 7th home date in 2013 for an FCS school yet to be named. The schedule has 3 weeks in a row North Texas, Marshall, FCS in Peden. I have no problems trying to move that 7th home game to something more pleasing on the road like Nebraska. I like the home balance of the Schaus strategy but I don't see why we don't play CUSA/Army/Navy instead of SBC/WAC for one and for two BCS games that are outside of the midwest. There are programs out there like East Carolina which don't have regional schools in conference and have to schedule NC State, Virginia Tech for travel cost reasons. The choices for BCS games thus far have been regional and the MAC is a very regional league as it is. Nebraska is not really in our region and a big ticket name. A game at Provo with BYU could be an opportunity with ESPN as a partner. I would move the Minnesota game and replace with Nebraska for starters and add a game @BYU for 2013.

I don't see Purdue in the same leauge with Nebraska, Penn State and Alabama. Purdue is in the same league with Indiana, Illinios, Northwestern the lower tier Big Ten programs. I do agree with your general point that names are important for recruiting. I would go out and sign what I call second tier national programs, UCLA, BYU, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Miami Fl. for money. Its games that we have a chance to win in any given year but they don't make the school look weak if we lose. The program is at the point where we should expect to beat a lower tier Big Ten or Big East program, if we lose it says we are a weak non-BCS club.  I thought that Tennessee game last year was perfect for us, it was challenging and we almost pulled out the win. Tennessee went on to a bowl out of the SEC. Crushing Minnesota doesn't really say very much. Ohio starts racking up BCS wins across the country and that will entice 3-4 star recruits to sign for the Bobcats just because they'll know they'll get an exciting game every year and a chance to win a conference championship ring in the MAC.

NMSU series needs to be removed from the schedule. The schedule in 2011 is unbelievably weak, @NMSU, GW, Marshall, @Rutgers. If Purdue won't agree to a series I would be willing to look at Nevada or Fresno State to replace NMSU. Its the biggest black eye on the schedule. Idaho at least is improving and may be a Mountain West school by the time we play them in 2015. I guess the only justification I could see by the athletic department in keeping NMSU is if the Bobcats don't win the East this year and with Boo graduating they figure it will be rebuilding time in 2011.
