Topic: Can media people ever get something right about the MAC?

In my neverending gripe about media people who phone it in when discussing the MAC:

During the past two weeks, Mike Huegenin at Rivals.com said that the Temple football team was "defending it's title" and that Josh Cribbs plays for the Baltimoron Ravens.

Last week, Mark Znidar of the Dispatch said OU (4-1) and Temple (3-1 at the time) were tied for first.

Today, CBS Sports posted its bowl predictions and has OU going to the GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile.  That would be great because the two teams in the MAC championship game go to GoDaddy and the Pizza Bowl.  But CBS predicts TEMPLE to go to the Pizza, which means OU would have to play Temple for the MAC title.  Schmucks.

I agree with you about the media overall. However, just a small point. The GoDaddy.com Bowl will take the best available MAC team, but it doesn't have to be the either of the two teams in the MAC Championship game. I know you would think that the league champion would be the best team, and the loser of the title game would be thought of as the next team in line for a bowl bid, but that isn't necessarily so. Since the title game pits two division champions together, one division champion coulod win the division title with an 8-4 or 7-5 overall record while the second place team could be 11-1 or 10-2, etc. The other division champion could be 6-6 and then actually go out and win the title game. The 11-1 team would be the better choice for a bowl game and thus get the GoDaddy.com invite if they don't go to the Pizza Bowl. Indeed, it seems to me that just a few years ago the Eastern Division champion was actually only the fifth best team in the MAC. The top four teams in the West had better seasons that the East champion that year.

However, for this year, should either the Cats or Temple win the title game, the loser of the title game, either Northern Illinois or Toledo, would certainly be the second pick, not the loser of the Ohio - Temple game. Thus, the media analyst's scenario could not end up right this year.

Thanks.  They just have GoDaddy and Pizza listed as "MAC 1/2".  I know in years past the teams in the title game have gone to Detroit and Mobile.  The International Bowl was always the #3 MAC team.

I agree, not living in the MAC region I have to depend on the media "experts" who prove that they are buffoons when talking about any team not in the top 25. They are really bad on every non BCS conference.

ESPN even went so far as to say that Austin Peay was a member of the MAC conference the week they played Wisconsin.

Hey Pataskala, try changing stations.  NPR always gets it right.  You might want to hurry though because they might not be on come January.

Not too long ago, Miami went 6-6 and lost in the MAC championship game, and thus was not eligible for a bowl.

We beat them in the last (regular season) game of that season, ultimately denying them their shot at a bowl...2007 methinks
