I had a few extra minutes today and came up with some boring stats that show how good this offense has become.
Getting touchdowns from special teams and the defense can take some pressure off the offense. This year, the O has had little help from the D and special teams in getting on the scoreboard. Last year, the D and special teams accounted for 8 touchdowns; this year, only 2.
Last year, the D and special teams set up the O on the opponent's side of midfield 32 times in 14 games -- more than twice a game; this year, just 19 times in 10 games. Nevertheless, the O already has more TDs this year than all of last year (38-32). And overall, this year's opposition has been about the same as last year's.
Obviously, the team greatly misses Brazill on kick returns and Keller and Moore on defense. But the offense has gelled as the season has progressed. This shows most in the red zone. Last year, they scored on 72% of the trips into the red zone, but got TDs only 42% of the time. This year, they've scored on 89% of the trips, with TDs 78% of the time.
They've done great but the toughest MAC opponents are yet to come. Hope they keep it going.
