It's about time you said something positive.  Despite the injuries to Boo, I refuse to believe that it is over until that clock hits zero.  Go Cats!!!

The offense has more than a week to give Temple something they haven't seen.  Like maybe a true option offense with Bates, Boykin, Harden and Davidson, along with reverses.  Then spring the pass.  For that to work well, the D and special teams have to step up and give the O some short fields and maybe take the pressure off with some scores -- something that's been lacking this year.  It'll have to be a total team effort.

Time for the bunker mentality that worked so well in '06.

It is interesting that you mention the option as an option.  10 days is probably way too short of a time to put it in, but in terms of the personnel that Ohio has now (and coming back next year) there may be no offense better suited for the talent.   Bates behind center with the option to give to Boykin on a fullback dive, toss to Goulet/Foster/Brazil (next year) on the reverse, or rollout with an option to pitch to Harden -- absolutely scary to prepare for.

If you compared what was arguably the best ground game skill positions in recent Ohio history (1998):
Kareem Wilson
Hookfin
Raynald Ray
J. Patterson/Riz Buckman

to this current group (2010):
Bates QB
Boykin FB
Harden
Brazil

I'd argue that Bates and Wilson are equal carrying the ball with Bates slightly better throwing it.  Anyhow, it is just interesting to think that with all the weapons that the Ohio offense can throw at opponents that if 8-12 times a game they lined up in the true option it would completely put defenses on their heels.   Or, best of all worlds, when Bates is in (spelling Boo still this season), sure, let 'em know the option is coming their way and dare them to stop it... that's what the K. Wilson led teams did, putting 9 in the box, and still couldn't slow them down.  Bring it on.

Bates only SLIGHTLY better than Wilson in passing?  Give me a break.  Wilson once lead the nation in fewest passes attempted.  That wasn't by accident.  Compared to Wilson, Bates is Colt McCoy in the passing department.

I was trying to be polite but, yeah, let's just say Kareen didn't have a cannon for an arm... in fact, it was said that his hands weren't big enough to really get a passer's grip on the ball.

Getting the option together may actually be less problematic than working on timing the passing routes.  Bates is only 9 of 20 passing this year, and that could improve with a week's work.  But from what I've seen, Bates seems more comfortable running option plays.  And I think the O line could adapt easily to the option.  It comes down to which would be more doable: fitting Bates into an offense that might not play to his strengths or fashioning an offense around those strengths.  Temple doesn't have film on the Cats using an old-style Solich option team, so it may throw them for a loop.

I am not in favor of tweeking, adding or changing what Bates has prepared for all season. I would like to see Ohio, rest up, get healthy, eat steaks for a week then line up and knock Temple into the next week. Man on man, one play at a time, in their house, five yards at a time. Not cute, throw in some misdirection and at least one throw back to Bates, let the chips fall where they may. It would also be nice if Hodge and Williamson contribute the games of their lives.

OK, I can accept politeness.  Many of us haven't shown much of that on this board recently.

That's an interesting comment about hand size.  I remember when I shook hands with Cleve Bryant for the first time I was amazed at how big his hands were compared to his diminutive stature.  If the rest of his body was in proportion to his hand size, he would have been 7'2"!

I look back fondly of those days and Kareem.  He would throw five  passes and two would be for touchdowns

Just to clarify, that's in a season -- not in a game.  (Though I do remember one game in which he did throw many more passes than usual, but that was one game out of four seasons worth.)

For the record, Kareem is still #6 in all-time QB rushing:

Pat White, West Virginia (2005-08): 684 carries, 4,480 yards
Brad Smith, Missouri (2002-05) 799 carries, 4,289 yards
Antwaan Randle El, Indiana (1998-01) 857 carries, 3,895 yards
Joshua Cribbs, Kent St. (2001-04) 632 carries, 3,670 yards
Dee Dowis, Air Force (1986-89) 543 carries, 3,612 yards
Kareem Wilson, Ohio (1995-98) 885 carries, 3,597 yards
Eric Crouch, Nebraska (1998-01) 648 carries, 3,434 yards
Chris McCoy, Navy (1995-97) 682 carries, 3,401 yards
Beau Morgan, Air Force (1994-96) 594 carries, 3,379 yards
Brian Mitchell, La.-Lafayette (1986-89) 678 carries, 3,335 yards

And didn't hold some type of rushing TD record for quarterbacks?

I guess I was wrong, but he had at least seven TD's in the 97 and 98 seasons (conbined).  It seemed he could only throw TD's.  Nothing else.  LOVED to watch that option !
