To me this is a free speech issue (symbolic speech), and I wish the guy would sue Oxford Tech.  Likewise, I cringe every time I hear that little notice over the PA system about the kinds of speech that won't be tolerated.  Though I use none of the proscribed speech myself, I just don't think an educational institution should be in the business of telling people what they can and cannot say.  Shame on them!  Shame on us!

We had this discussion a few weeks ago, and quite frankly Miami's actions are in violation of the First Amendment and removing the person from the game is a violation of this persons civil rights.  We posted some links to current stories on this issue that were a good read.  Many schools have such policies and remove people from venues in a manner that is not legal.

However, the old logo is still on shirts and hats sold at campus bookstores.

Miami senior Victor Kopen says ushers asked him to remove his headdress three times during the Oct. 23 game against Ohio University and then asked him to leave. Cincinnati's WCPO-TV reports Kopen says he only meant to show support for the team and Miami's rich athletic tradition.

Miami spokeswoman Claire Wagner says university policy is that any use of a Native American imagery must be done with respect and dignity.

When you wear native head dress at a football game it gets you kicked out, but when you buy a t shirt with an image of a native head dress on it you are doing it with 'respect and dignity". AKA, it's only alright if we can make a profit off of it.

At an institution of higher learning, any disrespectful portrayal of a minority group (particularly one that has suffered genocide and now abject poverty) should not be tolerated. However, seeing that Miami is still selling merch with that logo on it...this seems totally over the top.

I mean, you can't wear anything you want to a football game. I couldn't roll into Peden in full KKK regalia. I find this kid's outfit to be slightly in poor taste but not worthy of getting booted out of a game particularly given the hypocrisy of the university on the matter. And I have to be on of the most PC, liberal clowns on this board.

Maybe you should start a thread and ask all the lawyers.
