Does anyone know the hotel that we should stay in? It's been six years now since we've made the trip to Detroit, and neither my wife nor I can remember the name of the hotel. If anyone has a URL for the hotel, please post it below. By the way, my birthday is tomorrow, and my wife is gifting me the trip to Detroit for the MAC Championship game as my birthday present. She needs the URL to make the reservations.

BTW, got game tickets via ohiobobcats.com; however, I could not accomplish it with the Microsoft Edge browser, as I kept going in circles, where it would log me in, I'd make up the cart, and then when I went to pay it would treat me as a new customer and ask me to fill out a registration. Once I switched browsers, it worked without a hitch. Just a heads up for anyone else who might experience issues with Edge.

Well, that's a start. Anyone know the name?

Marriott at Renaissance is the former venue.

Ok, this does look familiar:

I wonder if we can rely on this being the "official" hotel this time.

Does anyone know if the official OHIO hotel will run a shuttle to Ford Field? May be the decision maker, if I stay there, or closer to the venue.

You’re late to the party. The shuttle issue has already been discussed on another thread.

Not late and I did read that. However, it’s a long walk from the team hotel to the stadium.

The People mover is a monorail that links major site in the core of the city. It has a stop at Ford Field and the Renaissance Center.

I agree with you, Billy. For as much joking as has been done over the years about the shuttle bus issue, it actually is a good idea. Detroit is not a town I where I would care for long walks. The AD absolutely should schedule a shuttle bus, not from every possible downtown hotel, but at least from the team hotel to the game, and back. It's also an idea that will cost them little or nothing, as they could charge some reasonable amount, say $30, for a round trip, and many people would gladly pay it.

From an informed source hidden deep in a bunker below the Convocation Center on Richland Avenue I discovered the following:

"The alumni/fan hotel is the Greektown Hotel. You can call 877-424-5554 and ask for the $190 MAC Alumni and Fan block."

However, this rate is only good for Friday night, if you want to stay an extra night, it'll cost you $600+ more. Most of the other hotels in the area had similar exorbitant rates for Saturday night. Not sure what's going on, but this will certainly put a damper on celebrating a Bobcat victory in the Motor City after the game.

Looks like Red Wings are home on Saturday and the Lions and Pistons are both home on Sunday, which would be the cause of the jacked up rates.

I scored my Greektown Hotel for free.

Picked it up through Choice Hotels. Required 30k points. Transferred the points 1:2 from Citi Thank You points. That is one of surprising sweet spots for Citi as AMEX doesn't have as good of a transfer ratio. Going to down to Florida I might scalp 10k or 20k rooms to not have to burn my more valuable Chase points.

I haven't paid out of pocket on travel for years and that includes 1,000 dollar a night suites through Hyatt with a $70 dollar a day breakfast credit.

I checked to see whether that 30,000 point requirement on Choice was inflated only for Friday night. It turns out that its 30,000 every night for the next 6 months.

For those looking then to book that second night which is retail $600 dollars, if you have 15,000 Citi points that equals 30,000 in Choice so right off the bat you'll get a 4 to 1 ratio on your Citi points. It requires the Citi Premier card however to transfer to Choice. If you also have the Rewards+ you'll get 10% of those points back (1,500) and Choice once you complete a stay kicks back 10% into your account. Choice doesn't have a great portfolio but they recently acquired Radisson. In Athens they have the Quality Inn.

What SEO doesn't have any of is Hyatt. In Chapel Hill their University Inn is run as a partnership with Hyatt and Ohio could do the same with OU Inn. Another idea is partnering in with Hyatt to built a suite hotel in Athens that could serve the visiting professors. A small Hyatt Regency on the vacant corner of Richland next to the OU Inn would be perfect as its so close to campus. Perfect for homecoming and basketball games.
